When owners of the Parisian bistro Barbershop asked designer Alexis Taieb to update the menus he had created two years earlier as part of their identity, Taeib took it upon himself to add a brand new typographic illustration as well. "They really trusted me, and I was very free to do wathever I want," said Taieb, who works freelance under the name Tyrsa.
"The proportions reminded me of a big wall, and I decided to make a tribute to the work of Herb Lubalin and the wall he made at CBS headquarters in 1966, mixing different types of dishes and drinks. So I took 35 items from the Barbershop menu and composed this huge illustration with them, mixing different typefaces, of different inspiration and different times, that remind me of the eclectic customers that frequent the restaurant." Joe Black est un artiste anglais qui combine réalisation technique et travail des matériaux pour créer des œuvres originales comme « Made in China« , réalisé à partir de 5 500 soldat en plastique.
Pour réaliser cette couverture de Paris Match, Joe Black a utilisé 2 508 petits badges ronds sur lesquels figurent des pin-up ou des scènes pornographiques. Clin d’œil conscient on s’en doute quand on voit le final, un portrait de DSK à la bouche barrée d’une croix rouge.
L’artiste a d’abord créé une toile de fond pour ajouter de la profondeur et couleur entre les éléments et a ensuite posé les badges par dessus. Environ un mois de travail a été nécessaire pour accomplir cette couverture.
C215, artiste français, réalise ses œuvres par la combinaison de pochoirs. Son choix s’est porté sur un portrait de Marilyn Monroe créé par une superposition de pochoirs et de coups de bombe pour parvenir à l’image telle qu’on la voit aujourd’hui.
« J’ai longuement hésité entre la couverture avec le sculpteur César, toute en clairobscur et qui me renvoie à ma série sur les clochards, et celle avec Marilyn Monroe. Mais, tant qu’à prendre une icône, j’ai choisi la plus célèbre. »

Après trois précédentes éditions sur le thème des années 60, du Comics américain et de la Russie, la Graphic Live Session revient sur l’univers du cinéma avec l’accent sur les affiches de films. Une soirée qui met en avant la créativité et l’originalité des participants tout en faisant découvrir au public les coulisses de la création numérique.
Comment se déroule cette soirée ?
Ce concours gratuit et ouvert a tous, réunit une dizaine de participants (en solo ou duo), et s’adresse aux graphistes de tout niveau. Des vidéoprojecteurs permettent au grand public de suivre l’avancée des créations et voir en direct les artistes exercer leur talent.
Particularité du concours, les œuvres devront être réalisées dans un temps imparti et des contraintes imposées (environ une tous les quarts d’heure) viendront pimenter l’exercice.
Un jury sélectionnera ensuite les 3 créations qui auront retenu leur attention, qui se verront remettre un des lots mis en jeu. Une manière originale de faire découvrir l’envers de la création numérique et pourquoi pas, soulever des vocations parmi les spectateurs présents lors de cette soirée.

Pour le Vadering, il s’agit de mimer quand Dark Vador utilise La Force pour projeter ses ennemies dans les airs ou les étrangler à distance. On doit donc voir apparaitre sur le cliché viral, d’un côté le mouvement de main de Dark Vador et de l’autre sa victime dans les airs.
Pour le Kamehamehing, la scène reproduite est celle ou d’un coup de poing en direction du sol, le héros provoque une vague de puissance capable de propulser dans les airs tout ce qui se trouve dans un rayon de plusieurs mètres.

The solution was the plus sign, which works as a connective tissue. It’s the core strategy of the brand and it’s baked into the logo and all brand language. It also speaks to enthusiasm, hyperbole and inclusiveness, which are core components of the brand. The visual identity is essentially a delivery system for that language, which can be reorganized and reinvented as needed. In the end, VH1 got a much-needed refresh as their viewership and programming had evolved beyond their old branding." CHIPS NY worked for seven months on the concept, design, and development of this responsive site for New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Weekly episodes explore exhibit pieces through the eyes of the curators, with a gorgeous design emphasizing new angles of images taken by Met staff photographers.
Each episode is paired with an interactive feature, and these take a variety of shapes. "One of our favorites so far is the Rembrandt image comparison," says Adam Squires of Chips. "We built a draggable slider to help users compare three versions of an engraving."
The site is built in Drupal. The editors at the Museum set the timecodes for the images, along with transitions and their durations, to mimic video editing software using Javacript. Credits: chips-ny.com

Each episode is paired with an interactive feature, and these take a variety of shapes. "One of our favorites so far is the Rembrandt image comparison," says Adam Squires of Chips. "We built a draggable slider to help users compare three versions of an engraving."

Le chêne à billet revient cette année. Mais le soleil de Californie doit taper un peu fort, ou alors ses propriétaires font pousser des pieds de cannabis pas loin (eux veulent nous faire croire que c’est la caféine qui lui fait cet effet…A d’autres !)

The ads stunned Canadians with the hard facts that heart disease & stroke is the number 1 killer of women and kills 1 in 3 overall.
Now that the firm had everyone's attention, Lowe Roche asked "How can we inspire Canadians to begin to take action and ultimately change the odds in the next campaign?" The new reality is the average Canadian is living longer but not healthier, and in fact spending the last ten years of life in sickness. "We needed to show Canadians that even making small changes to your health behaviors can greatly decrease your risk of disease, and create more years of health and vitality. Clean air challenge website is one of the greatest examples. It is optimized for all the screens currently available and it uses CSS3 animation for the cloud background. The website is also great from a typography point of view as it combines perfectly serif and not serif fonts. Beautiful bright colours combined in a lovely palette.
Enochs Fish & Chips is a beautiful single page website for a fish & chips café in North Wales. When you land on the page, you will see the Arthur Enoch Hughes in his boat who established the place. As you scroll down you see not only the menus but also you dive deep into the water until you reach the bottom. Also great is that you see the fish swimming back and forth all the time. Fully responsive and looks amazing on small screens.
Greenbelt is a very good example of a festival website. It is very clean, organized and uses a wide layout. The menu is multicoloured with small icons and it uses the CSS transparency, which a is really popular trend for this year. Greenbelt also looks great on small screens.
Mike Scopino is a UX strategist, designer, and Front-End Develop from Boston. He creates very beautiful stuff and his own website is a great example of what he can do. The website is a one-page gallery with some of his wonderful projects. The menu on the left is leads to different locations on the web linking to his dribble page, pdf resume, twitter etc. Really simple website functioning as online website resume.
More Hazards More Heroes is a Nashville folk duo and their website is a great example of band websites. It is a single page website presenting the last album of the band with a possibility to listen to it and download it. You also see some info for the band and the lyrics of their songs. While you listen to the music and read the lyrics, you see a little red icon showing you which song you are now listening to. Really creative layout and when seen on smaller screens the lyrics are omitted but you still have the option to listen and download their album.
MTV Hive is a great example of a responsive music website. Clean, organized, black and white with some colour accents. Also noticeable is the big hover areas and the infinite content scrolling (load more) which also popular in web design in 2013. Although, it follows the overall design of the main MTV website, it is somehow completely different. The optimization for smaller screens is wonderful.
Regent College website is an example of a beautiful academic website. Usually, this websites are a bit dull, they do not grab your attention, and they are somehow boring. Regent College is nothing similar to that. It is well-organized, with some colour accents for the top menu. Information is well structured and thoughtfully planned. On small screens, the website is an excellent example of layout design and structure.
Skinny Ties is a website, which shows you how a brand should sell their products and provides excellent shopping experience. The menu provides info for the ties they sell in a very thorough manner and you can choose a tie using the five categories. No useless information, you want to buy a tie, you just buy it.
Steven Caver’s website is a true inspiration when comes to marketing yourself. He finds the balance between “sell yourself” and “this is what I am”. His website expresses how he sees the world, making a point from the front page. His website is organized perfectly with a great personal touch and really showing his thoughts and views of what creative design is.
Stink Digital is an award-winning studio based in New York, London, and Paris. When you land on their page, you just dive into their amazing work. They work for the best and that is why their website is one the best. Beautiful colours and structure. Notice how the current menu item changes the colour when you go from page to page – a small detail which is very creative.

They are the ones responsible for STV website and they were hired by the UK Home Office. Their website looks amazing on all screens and is carefully coded.

Instead of explaining problems faced by the newspaper creative team of TBWA Hunt Lascaris associated campaign with country’s collapse, the worthless currency. The outdoor campaign was designed by throwing away trillion dollar notes with the message.
Large murals composed of hundred or thousands of banknotes were pasted on walls along streets with heavy foot falls and also billboards were purchased on highways. Messages such as "It's Cheaper To Print This On Money Than Paper" and "Thanks to Mugabe This Money Is Wallpaper" were printed on actual Zimbabwean 100 trillion dollar bank notes. Value of these notes at that time was USD $5. Bundles of cash was mailed to media personalities. The contact details of "The Zimbabwean" were printed on bank notes and was attached to the posters wherever it was sold.

He has done some amazing illustrated barcodes of some products trying to blend them with the design.
He also shares some tips if you decide to liven up the next packaging design you do:
Tips for illustrated barcodes:
• Colours can be changed but requires good contrast for scanning readability.
• The number string is only there to help a human reader interpret the barcode; change the god damn font!
• Space should be left at either end so the scanner can recognise the beggining and end of the code.
• For readability; there should be a healthy sized horizontal strip of uninterupted code.
• Test it! Print it out and check it using a barcode reader app on your smart phone.

In years past, the Charleston Ballet Theatre had always used photos of principal dancers in their posters and advertising. But when designer Gil Shuler was asked by a friend to create a series for the company's 2012-13 season, he felt they should head in the opposite direction.
Shuler's simple, yet effective graphic solution employs point shoes as the unifying element, making the posters easy to reproduce, conceptual, fun and memorable. Shuler created the entire series all at once—in one sitting—and the posters were immediately approved by CBT. The main design element is a visualization of what is not included in the data—the potential life that went un-lived by almost 10,000 people, amounting to more than 400,000 stolen years.
The site allows visitors to interact with each arc and reveal details of every incident. Visitors can explore gun type, race, sex, age, location, and whether or not the killing was part of a single or multiple shooting. Amazing statistics are uncovered, including the most popular weapon of choice: the handgun.
Periscopic hopes people will see the individual victims and not look at the aggregated numbers. "We're not trying to analyze this data. Page 1 of the Pune edition was designed by Pawan Kumar Tiwary and Jyotishman, in collaboration with the editorial team of the tabloid. The creative was conceptualised by Innocean, Korp's agency.
The page was completely handwritten and was done in parts, followed by compilation of these pieces of illustration and calligraphy into one page.The print run for the handwritten issue was the usual 1 lakh copies.

The first edition (2010) was limited and there were only 100o copies available (priced 1000 € for a hardcover in a clumshell box) and they were personally signed by the photographer himself.
TASCHEN decided to make happy the public and published theSteve Schapiro. Taxi Driver - unlimited edition for the wider audience.
Steve Schapiro not only documents the action but his photographs also catch the emotional intensity during the filming. Martin Scorsese says after the filming that this particular emotions during the making of the movie is the reason for him to be a little bit crazier. While preparing for his role, Robert De Niro manages to get a license for a taxi driver and he actually works as one for a couple of days.
Shapiro is known also for making the posters of "Midnight Cowboy" and the third sequence of the "Godfather". He also publishes for TASCHEN "The Godfather Family Album" (2008).
In the interview below he talks about what is like to be a photographer in a such a masterpiece.
"'Blood and guns in post-Vietnam America.' Steve Schapiro was Taxi Driver's special photographer and has just released a book through TASCHEN. We discuss what it was like behind the scenes of New York's most evocative movie…(Quoting Steve Schapiro) ‘I did the Godfather Family Album for TASCHEN. The great thing with that was the nostalgia factor. It brings back the film to you, it also revitalises a lot of the old images. But it’s also broken up with great text and captions. With Taxi Driver, Benedikt Taschen allowed me to run my pictures in a flow, with no breaks for text and caption, so that you just follow the pictures visually and you’re not interrupted at any point. Hi Evgeny please tell us a little bit about yourself, your past lives and how you came to be where you currently are today!
"It’s not first time when I answer this question, and it’s always difficult for me. Well, I’ll try again. I’m 25 years old, tall, blond guy I live and work in St Petersburg city, Russia.
The last two years I work as a freelance graphic designer and digital artist. Before that I wasted my time in an advertising agency working as art director. It was beautiful day when all that stuff made me think and I decided to lead myself into free flight.
Now I’m convinced it was the right way because the speed of professional growth is much higher than when you are imprisoned in any office. Finally I needn’t an alarm-clock."

David Carson on design + discovery
David Carson's boundary-breaking typography in the 1990s, in Ray Gun magazine and other pop-cult books, ushered in a new vision of type and page design -- quite simply, breaking the traditional mold of type on a page and demanding fresh eyes from the reader. Squishing, smashing, slanting and enchanting the words on a layout, Carson made the point, over and over, that letters on a page are art. You can see the repercussions of his work to this day, on a million Flash intro pages (and probably just as many skateboards and T-shirts).
Chip Kidd: Designing books is no laughing matter. OK, it is.
You know a Chip Kidd book when you see it -- precisely because it's unexpected, non-formulaic, and perfectly right for the text within. As a graphic designer for Alfred A. Knopf since 1986, Kidd has designed shelves full of books, including classics you can picture in a snap:Jurassic Park, Naked by David Sedaris, All the Pretty Horses … His monograph, Chip Kidd: Book One, contains work spanning two decades. Stefan Sagmeister: Designing with slogans
Stefan Sagmeister is no mere commercial gun for hire. Sure, he's created eye-catching graphics for clients including the Rolling Stones and Lou Reed, but he pours his heart and soul into every piece of work. His design work is at once timeless and of the moment, and hispainstaking attention to the smallest details creates work that offers something new every time you look at it.
While a sense of humor invariably surfaces in his designs, Sagmeister is nonetheless very serious about his work; his intimate approach and sincere thoughtfulness elevate his design. A genuine maverick, Sagmeister achieved notoriety in the 1990s as the designer who self-harmed in the name of craft: He created a poster advertising a speaking engagement by carving the salient details onto his torso.
Tim Berners-Lee on the next Web
In the 1980s, scientists at CERN were asking themselves how massive, complex, collaborative projects -- like the fledgling LHC -- could be orchestrated and tracked. Tim Berners-Lee, then a contractor, answered by inventing the World Wide Web. This global system of hypertext documents, linked through the Internet, brought about a massive cultural shift ushered in by the new tech and content it made possible: AOL, eBay, Wikipedia, TED.com...
Berners-Lee is now director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which maintains standards for the Web and continues to refine its design. Recently he has envisioned a "Semantic Web" -- an evolved version of the same system that recognizes the meaning of the information it carries. He is also a senior researcher at MIT's Computer Science and AI Lab.
Ze Frank's web playroom
Ever since his "How to Dance Properly" viral video -- born as a party invite for 17 friends -- hit the Web in 2001, Ze Frank has been making people giggle, guffaw and gasp out loud whilst procrastinating at work. He defines, in many ways, the genre of online comedy, and continues to innovate madly on the form.
In 2006 he launched a year-long daily video blog called The Show with Ze Frank, which Slate.com called "the best sustained comedy run in the history of the Web." His rapid-fire delivery and absurd explorations in audience participation (like Earth Sandwich) has influenced a generation of digital native YouTubers. Perhap his most brilliant move: calling on fans to write the show for him. Using collaborative tools, online viewers collectively put words in his mouth (and props in his lap); he faithfully performed this wiki-comedy each week for his "Fabuloso Friday" show.
Ron Eglash: The fractals at the heart of African designs
"Ethno-mathematician" Ron Eglash is the author of African Fractals, a book that examines the fractal patterns underpinning architecture, art and design in many parts of Africa. By looking at aerial-view photos -- and then following up with detailed research on the ground -- Eglash discovered that many African villages are purposely laid out to form perfect fractals, with self-similar shapes repeated in the rooms of the house, and the house itself, and the clusters of houses in the village, in mathematically predictable patterns.
As he puts it: "When Europeans first came to Africa, they considered the architecture very disorganized and thus primitive. It never occurred to them that the Africans might have been using a form of mathematics that they hadn't even discovered yet."
His other areas of study are equally fascinating, including research into African and Native American cybernetics, teaching kids math through culturally specific design tools (such as theVirtual Breakdancer applet, which explores rotation and sine functions), and race and ethnicity issues in science and technology. Eglash teaches in the Department of Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, and he recently co-edited the book Appropriating Technology, about how we reinvent consumer tech for our own uses.

Stefan Sagmeister is no mere commercial gun for hire. Sure, he's created eye-catching graphics for clients including the Rolling Stones and Lou Reed, but he pours his heart and soul into every piece of work. His design work is at once timeless and of the moment, and hispainstaking attention to the smallest details creates work that offers something new every time you look at it.
While a sense of humor invariably surfaces in his designs, Sagmeister is nonetheless very serious about his work; his intimate approach and sincere thoughtfulness elevate his design. A genuine maverick, Sagmeister achieved notoriety in the 1990s as the designer who self-harmed in the name of craft: He created a poster advertising a speaking engagement by carving the salient details onto his torso.

In the 1980s, scientists at CERN were asking themselves how massive, complex, collaborative projects -- like the fledgling LHC -- could be orchestrated and tracked. Tim Berners-Lee, then a contractor, answered by inventing the World Wide Web. This global system of hypertext documents, linked through the Internet, brought about a massive cultural shift ushered in by the new tech and content it made possible: AOL, eBay, Wikipedia, TED.com...
Berners-Lee is now director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which maintains standards for the Web and continues to refine its design. Recently he has envisioned a "Semantic Web" -- an evolved version of the same system that recognizes the meaning of the information it carries. He is also a senior researcher at MIT's Computer Science and AI Lab.

Ever since his "How to Dance Properly" viral video -- born as a party invite for 17 friends -- hit the Web in 2001, Ze Frank has been making people giggle, guffaw and gasp out loud whilst procrastinating at work. He defines, in many ways, the genre of online comedy, and continues to innovate madly on the form.
In 2006 he launched a year-long daily video blog called The Show with Ze Frank, which Slate.com called "the best sustained comedy run in the history of the Web." His rapid-fire delivery and absurd explorations in audience participation (like Earth Sandwich) has influenced a generation of digital native YouTubers. Perhap his most brilliant move: calling on fans to write the show for him. Using collaborative tools, online viewers collectively put words in his mouth (and props in his lap); he faithfully performed this wiki-comedy each week for his "Fabuloso Friday" show.
Ron Eglash: The fractals at the heart of African designs
"Ethno-mathematician" Ron Eglash is the author of African Fractals, a book that examines the fractal patterns underpinning architecture, art and design in many parts of Africa. By looking at aerial-view photos -- and then following up with detailed research on the ground -- Eglash discovered that many African villages are purposely laid out to form perfect fractals, with self-similar shapes repeated in the rooms of the house, and the house itself, and the clusters of houses in the village, in mathematically predictable patterns.
As he puts it: "When Europeans first came to Africa, they considered the architecture very disorganized and thus primitive. It never occurred to them that the Africans might have been using a form of mathematics that they hadn't even discovered yet."
His other areas of study are equally fascinating, including research into African and Native American cybernetics, teaching kids math through culturally specific design tools (such as theVirtual Breakdancer applet, which explores rotation and sine functions), and race and ethnicity issues in science and technology. Eglash teaches in the Department of Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, and he recently co-edited the book Appropriating Technology, about how we reinvent consumer tech for our own uses.

Two great brands are vivid examples of the change of the logo image through the years but keeping their original colours. Pepsi and Coca Cola have changed the way their logos and keep changing it.Nevertheless, Coca Cola's logo is still very close to their initial design, contrary to Pepsi which logo have changed immensely. Using the wonderful words of acclaimed writer, actor and allround know it all (I mean that in the best of ways) Stephen Fry I have created this kinetic typography animation. If you like what you hear you can download the rest of the audio file from Mr. Fry's website. www.stephenfry.com and then go to the audio and video section at the top of the page and look for the file entitled language. You can also find the file on iTunes by searching the name 'Stephen Fry's Podgrams'.
I loved this particular essay on language and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to make my first kinetic typography. I hope you like it and even if you dont I would like to heard what you think in the comments section. Also I know that at points the audio does not match the text so you do not have to write that. It is because I copied the transcript off of Stephen's website and it was not 100% exactly what he said and i did not notice until I was well underway. However these cases are few and far between.
Just incase you were wondering the programs I used to make this were all by adobe. Mostly after effects but also flash and illustrator. Flash for the changing background colour transitions and illustrator for putting the words in to the shape of 'language' before loading it into after effects to animate.

These days the Internet is abundant with different CSS generators for buttons, arrows, gradients etc. They are all very useful and really saves you time. This simple CSS Button Generator has all the features like the other ones you know but it has a really friendly interface. You can generate and adjust normal, hover and active state. There a certain things that have to be considered when you have to start a new project. It is a long way from the design brief to the finished website. What are the most the most important things to consider at the beginning? What colour are the most appropriate? What is your web site's visual hierarchy? Where should you position the CTA buttons ?
