LOS ANGELES (AP) – Forty-somethings Jaromir Jagr and Ray Whitney scored 4:22 apart in the third period, lifting Dallas to a 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night for the Stars’ fourth straight win at Staples Center.

The 41-year-old Jagr and 40-year-old Whitney scored in the same game for the second time this season. On Jan. 19 against Phoenix, they became the fourth pair of teammates age 40 or older to score in the same game since 1942-43.

Kari Lehtonen made 40 saves to earn his first shutout of the season. He has won four of his last five appearances against the Kings.

Lehtonen faced at least 40 shots for the fourth time this season and improved to 16-3-1 in games where opponents record at least 35 shots dating to last season.

The Kings’ three-game winning streak ended as did their run of five straight wins at home since losing to the Stars 5-2 on March 7. Jagr scored twice in that game.

Jonathan Quick stopped 19 shots for the Kings.

After two scoreless periods during which the Kings outshot the Stars 30-15, Jagr finally got his team untracked. He scored his team-leading 12th goal at 6:34, taking the puck wide and holding it before shooting and watching it bounce into the net.

Whitney made it 2-0 at 10:56, beating Quick stickside for his fifth goal.

DENVER (AP) - Joe Sacco’s decision to shake up his lineup paid immediate dividends for the Colorado Avalanche coach.

Sacco inserted little-used Mark Olver into the lineup, and the forward had a goal and an assist to help spark Colorado’s rally in the third period that beat the Dallas Stars 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Chuck Kobasew also had two points — including the game-winning goal — and Ryan O’Reilly had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche, who snapped a four-game skid.

It was a banner return to action for Olver, who had been a healthy scratch for seven games. He used the opportunity to state his case for more playing time.

“It hasn’t been very good. I’ve been out of the lineup for a while and it was good to make a contribution,” he said. “I made mine tonight when it counted.”

Olver was almost the hero when Colorado came all the way back from a two-goal deficit. The Avalanche got the winner when Matt Hunwick’s shot from the boards hit Dallas defenseman Stephane Robidas in the back of the head and dropped to the ice. Kobasew quickly knocked it in with a backhand — a moment before Olver would have knocked it in.

“I took a good whack at it and was fortunate to put the puck in,” Kobasew said. “Unfortunate that he (Robidas) was hurt on the play.”

Olver dived on the ice in celebration — and relief.

“Sitting on the sidelines is not fun and it was great to come in and help tonight,” he said.

Jaromir Jagr scored a goal and had two assists, and Trevor Daley and Ray Whitney also scored for the Stars.

“I don’t think we realize that it’s a playoff game for us,” Jagr said. “Every game from now on is. We played like it was game No. 4.”

Jagr played his first 19 NHL seasons in the Eastern Conference before joining the Stars this season. Facing the Avalanche might have been a reason he came West: Jagr has more points (46) against Colorado than any other Western Conference team, and he continued that success Wednesday.

His goal in the first period, his 11th, made it 1-0. He then assisted on Daley’s third goal of the season four minutes later.

It was a typical slow start or the Avalanche, who have dropped five straight. Colorado has been outscored 34-19 in the first period this season, which has contributed to being in last place in the Western Conference.

With the season slipping away, Sacco made forwards Jamie McGinn and David Jones, who have a combined one point in the last nine games, healthy scratches and brought in Olver.

“We had to make some changes. Changes we felt would help our lineup and that’s what I did,” Sacco said. “There comes a point where you wait around for people to get the job done and after a while you have to make a decision, hard decisions. Those are decisions you have to make.”

It didn’t appear to make a difference early, but the Avalanche fought back in the second to tie it. Olver scored on a rebound off the backboards midway through the period and Gabriel Landeskog scored a short-handed goal at 13:30, his second in as many games.
Dallas got the lead right back when Whitney took a pass from Jagr, skated past the front of the net and scored on a backhand 2:26 later to make it 3-2.

The Avalanche pressed for the equalizer and finally got it at 6:20 of the third when O’Reilly came down the left side, stumbled before gathering himself to beat Kari Lehtonen on the short side.

“We played well enough to win and invented a way to lose,” Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said.

Eriksson Leads Stars Over Flames 4-3

DALLAS (AP) - The Dallas Stars could not let this one slip away.

Loui Eriksson scored twice and the Stars held on for a 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames on Monday night.

Eric Nystrom and Erik Cole also scored and Ray Whitney added two assists for Dallas, which snapped a four-game losing streak (0-3-1) — a stretch that dropped the Stars from seventh place in the Western Conference to 13th.

“It was a big win. I thought we clawed our way a little bit to the surface here, we still got a few feet to go,” Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said. “We were doing simple things to win the game, our leadership was real good throughout. We have to continue with that mindset.”

The Stars, coming off an 8-1 loss Saturday night against Chicago, had been outscored 14-2 while losing their last three games but closed a four-game homestand with the much-needed victory. In the midst of a crucial stretch of their schedule, the Stars head out for two road games before returning to Texas for another five in a row.

“Games like that happen and sometimes you’re going to suffer like that during the course of a season,” Nystrom said of the Chicago loss. “Sometimes playing at home is harder than playing on the road. You think that you have to do something extra, but you just have to play a simple game and that’s what makes us successful. We’ve got to learn from this.”

Kari Lehtonen, making his eighth straight start, made 16 saves for Dallas.

“It was huge, after such a bad game, it was nice to play a great game,” Lehtonen said. “They kind of sneaked back in and made it more interesting than it should have been. Every game is huge right now, the race is so tight. It’s an exciting time to be a hockey player and we just have to build on this.”

The Stars bolted out to a 3-0 lead in the first period but the Flames battled back, scoring two power-play goals in the second and battling down to the wire after Alex Tanguay’s goal with 4:46 remaining pulled them within one.

“It’s the end result. To push back doesn’t bring you to the big dance,” Calgary coach Bob Hartley said. “We have to learn to play defense, plain and simple. If we can’t play in our zone it’s pretty tough to win games. If you’ll look at tonight we have lots of work to do.”

Jiri Hudler and Jay Bouwmeester also found the back of the net for Calgary and Mike Cammalleri chipped in with two assists.

Joey MacDonald made 20 saves as the Flames lost their seventh straight road game (0-6-1), getting outscored 28-11 in those contests dating to their previous Dallas visit on Feb. 17, when they won 4-3.

“You’ve got to find a way. It seems like on the road we start slow and it takes time to get going,” MacDonald said. “At home we have the energy, we have the crowd behind us. I don’t know what it is.”

The Stars were cruising along with a 3-0 lead midway through the second when the momentum changed following a big hit by Dallas’ Cody Eakin on Matt Stajan at 11:17. Not only did Eakin earn an interference penalty, but it got the Flames fired up.

“That’s one of the dirtiest hits that I’ve seen,” Hartley said. “Those hits can end careers. But we replied well. We took advantage on the power play but definitely we need to take those hits out of our game.”

Calgary needed just 13 seconds to capitalize, pulling to 3-1 when Hudler deflected a wrist shot from the right point by T.J. Brodie over Lehtonen’s shoulder for his sixth goal.

Bouwmeester got his sixth of the season on another power play to make it 3-2 at 14:35, lifting a backhander from the edge of the crease over Lehtonen’s blocker.

The Flames kept up the pressure early in the third but Lehtonen made a sparkling save on Curtis Glencross’ snap shot from the left circle at 1:15.

Dallas made it 4-2 on Eriksson’s second of the night at 12:06 of the third when Jamie Benn’s pass through the slot bounced past defenseman Mark Giordano and Eriksson managed to dig it out and whip a wrist shot past MacDonald for his ninth of the season.

Tanguay pulled Calgary back within one with 4:46 remaining with his ninth goal. He swooped in on a breakaway, made a move to his backhand and slipped it behind Lehtonen.

“They had a push in the third that I thought we weathered pretty good,” Gulutzan said. “I thought we stabilized a bit, our leadership was good and the end always gets hairy.”

DALLAS (AP) – Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa each scored twice in leading the Chicago Blackhawks to an 8-1 rout of the Dallas Stars on Saturday night.

Nick Leddy and Patrick Kane each had a goal and two assists as eight Blackhawks scored two or more points and Chicago boosted its road record to 12-1-2 with a dominant win on the second stop of a four-game road trip.

Corey Crawford made 18 saves for his 13th victory. Johnny Oduya and Duncan Keith had the Blackhawks’ other goals.

Trevor Daley scored for the Stars, who have been outscored 16-3 in losing four straight (0-3-1). The Stars will play nine of their next 11 at home, where they have lost three in a row and are 2-5-1 in their last nine.

Ducks Slip Past Stars In Shootout

DALLAS (AP) — Ryan Getzlaf kept the Anaheim Ducks on a roll on Thursday.

Getzlaf scored on a backhand in the third round of the shootout and Jonas Hiller made 33 saves to help lead the Ducks to a 2-1 victory over the Dallas Stars.

“I got to take what he gives me and he was playing pretty deep in his net,” Getzlaf said of his move that beat Dallas goaltender Kari Lehtonen. “He didn’t give me much for the shot — if the shot’s there, I’m probably taking it, that’s one of the other options.”

Andrew Cogliano scored in regulation for Anaheim, which has won five in a row and gone nine games without a regulation defeat (7-0-2).

Despite missing star Corey Perry, who was serving the first of a four-game suspension for his hit on Minnesota’s Jason Zucker on Tuesday, Anaheim improved its record to 9-2-3 on the road.

“Is it better to be good than lucky or is it better to be lucky or whatever the phrase is,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. “But I mean, when you’re playing really good, things seem to go off the post, because maybe that’s all they have to shoot at. I’d rather take that than the alternative, because we’ve been on the other side of it.”

Bobby Ryan also scored in the shootout, while Hiller stopped both Dallas shooters he faced.

“If you’re fighting hard and doing the right things, things will go your way,” said Hiller, who is 7-0-1 in his past eight outings.

“Definitely I feel pretty good right now and I’m confident in how I’m playing, but at the same time, I know I’m playing well because I’m battling, I’m pushing myself and that’s when you get lucky.”

Ray Whitney, in his second game back after missing 16 due to a broken foot, scored the only goal for the Stars, who have scored just two in their past three games.

Lehtonen, making his sixth straight start, had 29 saves.

Dallas was missing center Jamie Benn, who sat out his second straight game with a wrist injury, but had numerous opportunities that it didn’t capitalize on, missing five breakaways, hitting three goalposts or crossbars and having what could have been the go-ahead goal disallowed.

“We had a lot of good chances, just kind of got the wrong side of the post on a few of them,” said Dallas rookie Reilly Smith, who had two breakaways and rang another shot off the post.

“We have to start burying the puck because these last few games we haven’t created enough offensive opportunities to put the puck in the back of the net.”

With the game tied at 1 midway through the second period, the Stars had back-to-back opportunities to take the lead.

After entering the Anaheim zone on the rush, Whitney rolled the puck in on goal, but Hiller left a rebound in front.

Derek Roy pounced on it, popping it over Hiller’s pads at 10:27 just as the whistle sounded, nullifying the goal.

“Those things are unfortunate. They happen, people make mistakes,” said Dallas captain Brenden Morrow, who returned to the lineup after missing two games with a groin injury. “(Referee Marc Joannette) made a mistake there, he was a little quick on his whistle. But we needed to step up. We had plenty of opportunities to find one. We didn’t. It’s on us.”

Just 38 seconds later, it looked as if Smith put Dallas ahead, but his in-close chip shot over Hiller’s blocker ricocheted off the right post, pinged off the crossbar and bounced out behind Hiller.

An Anaheim turnover gave Dallas another breakaway with 6:21 left in the second, but Hiller made a nice save on Eric Nystrom’s wrist shot.

Lehtonen made a nice stop on a Ducks power play with 2:17 remaining when he slid across the crease to stop Francois Beauchemin’s one-timer from the right side of the crease.

With Dallas on the power play, Lehtonen came up with another big save 48 seconds into the final period when he slid across the crease to get his pad on rookie Emerson Etem’s one-timer from the right circle.

The Stars appeared to take the lead again with 3:25 left in regulation, while on a power play, when Jaromir Jagr swiped a shot from the left side of the crease, while falling, past Hiller.

The horn sounded, Dallas players celebrated, but the officials waved it off and play continued for another 33 seconds before there was a video review. Replays clearly showed the puck hitting the right post and crossbar and never crossing the goal line.

“The one that the ref blew the whistle there, I thought I was definitely lucky, but on the other ones, both of the posts, I got a piece of it,” Hiller said. “When you get those bounces and things hit you and hit the post and go out instead of hit you and hit the post and go in, definitely that makes you feel bigger. I felt pretty good there.”

The Stars opened the scoring with Whitney getting his third goal of the season 12:35 into the opening period. After Alex Goligoski’s wrist shot hit Loui Eriksson’s skate in front, Whitney found the loose puck first, sending a backhand over Hiller’s glove.

Hiller made a nice save after Whitney’s cross-ice backhand pass on a 2-on-1 rush led to Eriksson’s point-blank wrist shot 2:47 into the second.

Dallas had two good opportunities to seize a two-goal lead, but was unable to cash in when Smith sped in on a breakaway at 6:32, but his wrist shot sailed over the crossbar.

Just 12 seconds later, the Stars drove back into the Anaheim zone on a 2-on-1 rush that led to Roy’s one-timer from the right faceoff circle, but Hiller made the save.

Less than a minute later, the Ducks tied it on Cogliano’s 10th goal of the season.

After receiving a nice backhand pass from Peter Holland, Lehtonen made a great save on Cogliano’s one-timer from in front, but Cogliano managed to jam home the loose rebound at 7:28.

DALLAS (AP) – The Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars entered their matchup with key offensive players out of action.

Pekka Rinne and the rest of the Predators’ defense made sure Nashville needed only a bit of scoring to win.

Rinne stopped 32 shots for his NHL-leading fifth shutout of the season, and Shea Weber and Gabriel Bourque scored power-play goals to lift the Predators to a 4-0 win over the Stars on Tuesday night.

Despite leading scorer Colin Wilson and top-six forward Patric Hornqvist being out because of upper body injuries, the Predators snapped a six-game, road-losing streak (0-5-1) on the first stop of a five-game trip.

Nick Spaling added a goal, and Rich Clune scored on a penalty shot for the Predators. David Legwand and Craig Smith both had two assists.

“It’s a huge trip for us. It’s obviously nice to get that first game right away, get a big win. This is what we needed,” said Rinne, who has allowed one goal over his last three outings. “We scored timely goals, and our penalty kill tonight was really good. I think it was a strong game defensively.”

Kari Lehtonen made 17 saves for the Stars, who had scored at least three goals in 13 of 15 games. Dallas, which was shut out for the third time this season, has one goal in its last two games after totaling 19 in the previous five.

“Certainly, we needed to be a little bit better in a bunch of areas,” Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said. “We played soft, we didn’t go to the hard areas to score, we didn’t force it down their throat. We just thought, `Maybe we’ll get some fluff or get a bounce, maybe one will come to me at the back door, whatever.’

“You’ve got to jam it down their throat, come after them.”

Nashville scored on two of four power plays and turned aside Dallas’ four advantages. The Predators are 5-for-10 on the power play in their last three games after a 1-for-14 slump in the previous six.

“We need our special teams to be good, and they ended up being pretty good on both ends,” Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. “The best penalty killer was obviously our goaltender, who was outstanding. But a lot of guys contributed. You just had a lot of people step up, a lot of the younger guys are stepping up.”

Although veteran forward Ray Whitney returned after missing 16 games because of a broken foot, the Stars were without top-line center Jamie Benn (wrist) and captain Brenden Morrow, who sat out a second game (groin).

The Stars began a season-high, four-game homestand as part of a stretch in which they will play nine of 11 in Dallas. They fell to 5-5-1 there.

“Every game is important now, especially the home games,” Stars winger Loui Eriksson said. “I thought we had some really good chances. I don’t know, we just have to be better to score the goals there.”

With the Predators leading 2-0 midway through the second period, Clune scored on a penalty shot at 9:09, firing a wrist shot through Lehtonen’s pads. It was the first penalty shot for Clune, a former Stars draft pick who never played for them.

“I was kind of thinking shot the whole way,” said Clune, who earned the penalty shot when he was hooked by Jordie Benn on a breakaway. “The ice is a little chippy here in Dallas, so I didn’t want to deke and fumble on the puck. I was thinking either low blocker or five-hole, and he was pretty far back in his net.”

Dallas’ best scoring chance came with 3:17 left in the second, when Whitney set up Trevor Daley for a one-timer from the slot. Even though he had a half-empty net, Daley’s shot hit teammate Erik Cole in the skate before Rinne dived across to knock away the rebound.

“It was just a scramble play, but sometimes you have to be lucky, too,” Rinne said. “It was a wide open net, and he put it on the ice, and I was able to get it. I was a little bit lucky, too.”

An outbreak of fights erupted with 5:35 remaining in the third period during a Nashville power play after Mike Fisher crashed into Lehtonen. Stephane Robidas challenged Fisher to a fight, and two more bouts broke out elsewhere.

Just 33 seconds later, Bourque scored his seventh goal.

Spaling got the all-important first goal with a shot that beat Lehtonen’s glove at 12:16 of the first period. It was his fourth of the season.

Weber’s fourth of the season appeared to glance off the stick of Jordie Benn in front and just inside the left post at 2:16 of the second.

“We made some young errors, had some turnovers, especially with our D,” Gulutzan said. “We need our big guys to step up when those situations happen, to take control, and we didn’t do it.”

The Stars responded with considerable pressure, but Rinne made outstanding saves on Whitney’s one-timer from the left circle at 3:15 and on Eriksson’s one-timer from the right circle at 4:38.

NOTES: Predators C Paul Gaustad left the game after the second period with an upper body injury and didn’t return. … Wilson, who leads Nashville with seven goals and 19 points in 25 games, was injured Saturday against Minnesota. He is expected to be out at least through the weekend. … The Stars honored former RW Bill Guerin, who spent three seasons with Dallas from 2002-06, by putting him on the club’s all-time team. Guerin had 72 goals and 159 points in 216 games with them. … The Predators are 10-0-5 this season when they score first. Dallas is 1-10-1 when its opponent strikes first.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Rob Klinkhammer netted his first NHL goal in his Coyotes debut, and Shane Doan also scored as Phoenix beat the Dallas Stars 2-1 on Saturday night.

Mike Smith made 20 saves for the Coyotes, who ended a two-game losing streak. Phoenix won the season series from Dallas 2-1-1 and has a point in nine of 10 games against the Stars.

Jaromir Jagr scored a goal during a 5-on-3 power play for the Stars, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Phoenix took a 1-0 lead on a play in which four of the six Coyotes on the ice touched the puck within a handful of seconds and culminated with Doan’s goal.

Steve Sullivan carried the puck into the Dallas zone, stopped in the left circle, and sent a pass back to the streaking Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Ekman-Larsson spun right to avoid the Stars defense and passed to Antione Vermette behind the net, who then fed the puck back to Doan at the right edge of the crease for the goal.

Solid passing also led to Klinkhammer’s goal in his 16th NHL game — all but one with Ottawa.

Dave Moss forced a turnover behind the Dallas net, and Ben Gordon intercepted a pass near the bottom of the right circle. With Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen shading right, Gordon slid the puck to an open Klinkhammer for the goal into the vacated left side of the net to make it 2-0 at 7:31 of the second.

Jagr pulled Dallas within 2-1 at 18:19, beating Smith with a blast from the top of the right circle with 17 seconds left in Dallas’ first of two 5-on-3 power plays.

Dallas had an 89-second 5-on-3 opportunity midway through the third period but were unable to solve Smith, who had allowed 16 goals in his past three starts.

NOTES: Doan has 31 goals and 37 assists in 97 games against the Stars. . Coyotes C Matthew Lombardi, who aggravated an upper body injury in Phoenix’s loss to St. Louis on Thursday, was out of the lineup. LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jaromir Jagr had his first multi-goal game since opening night, Brenden Morrow got the go-ahead goal in the third period, and the Dallas Stars ended the Kings’ six-game home winning streak with a 5-2 victory on Thursday night.

Jagr and Cody Eakin connected on power plays for Dallas’ first two goals after penalties against Los Angeles defenseman Keaton Ellerby. Jagr converted a rebound of Jamie Benn’s shot with 10:20 remaining, his ninth of the season and 674th of his career — 10th on the NHL’s all-time list.

Jagr’s three-game goal streak is his longest since his final four games of the 2007-08 regular season with the Rangers. The nine-time All-Star and 1999 MVP spent the next three years out of the NHL before returning last season with Philadelphia, and has 27 goals in 95 games since his comeback began.

Antoine Roussel completed the scoring with an empty-net goal and Kari Lehtonen stopped 30 shots in his third straight start, after missing the previous five games with a lower body injury.

Jeff Carter scored his 12th goal in 12 games and 16th this season for Los Angeles. Trevor Lewis also scored for the defending Stanley Cup champions and Jonathan Quick made 17 saves.

Quick’s record slipped to 7-7-2. Last season he was 35-21-13 while setting franchise records with 10 shutouts, a 1.95 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage before winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

Dallas rookie forward Reilly Smith hit the left post with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle in the second period with the score 1-1.

The Kings had a chance to take the lead with a short-handed goal as Carter took off on a 2-on-1 rush with Mike Richards while Alec Martinez was serving a tripping penalty. Lehtonen made the save on Richards, but the Kings took a 2-1 lead shortly after as Carter’s wrist shot from the right caromed into the net off Benn’s left skate.

Dallas pulled even late in period, as Eakin chipped the puck past the backchecking Martinez in the Kings’ zone and beat Quick to the glove side while Ellerby was off for hooking Trevor Daley.

Jagr opened the scoring 5:28 into the game. Ellerby was off for tripping Erik Cole when Benn passed the puck from the top of the right circle to Jagr about 10 feet to the left of the net, and the five-time NHL scoring champ one-timed it past Quick.

Los Angeles tied it when Dwight King’s persistent forechecking against Alex Goligoski behind the net allowed Lewis to gain control. He circled the net before using Vernon Fidler as a screen to beat Lehtonen high to the stick side.

NOTES: Morrow’s goal was his 243rd with the Stars, tying Jere Lehtinen for second place on the Dallas list behind Mike Modano’s 434. Modano scored 123 other goals for the franchise while it was in Minnesota. … Jagr needs four assists to join Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Steve Yzerman, Joe Sakic and former Pittsburgh teammate Mario Lemieux as the only players in NHL history with at least 1,000 assists and 600 goals. … Los Angeles D Rob Scuderi and Dallas LW Eric Nystrom were both raised in the same town, Syosset, N.Y., which is about 30 miles east of Madison Square Garden. Nystrom is the son of Bobby Nystrom, who won four Stanley Cup titles with the Islanders. … This was the opener of a five-game season series with the Stars, whom the Kings beat out for the final Western Conference playoff berth before becoming the first eighth seed to win a Stanley Cup.

NEW YORK (AP) – The NHL moved a step closer to realignment Thursday as the players’ association approved a proposed plan that is set to go into effect next season.

Now that the league has gotten the go-ahead from union chief Donald Fehr, the NHL will only need to get approval from the board of governors to put it in place.

No official details of the changes have been released by the NHL, but it is widely believed that teams such as Detroit and Columbus will be put into more travel-friendly divisions in the Eastern time zone, and the Winnipeg Jets — formerly the Atlanta Thrashers — will leave the Southeast Division for a spot in the Western Conference.

DALLAS (AP) - The Dallas Stars’ team defense and discipline were enough to stop the St. Louis Blues.

Derek Roy had a goal and two assists and Kari Lehtonen made 25 saves to help the Stars to a 4-1 victory over the Blues on Sunday.

After a deflating 5-1 loss at home against Edmonton on Thursday, in which the Stars gave the Oilers nine power plays, Dallas rebounded with a strong defensive effort and allowed only one power play.

“That was the first thing we said in the pregame meeting, stay out of the box,” Roy said. “They can’t score on the power play if they’re not on the power play, so they got one that we did a good job killing, but we also stayed disciplined.”

Loui Eriksson, Jaromir Jagr and Erik Cole also scored for Dallas, which had been 1-3 in its previous four home games.

For Cole, it was his first goal with Dallas in his second game with the team since he was acquired in a trade with Montreal last week.

Lehtonen was strong after the Edmonton loss, which was his first game back after missing five because of a groin strain.

“He didn’t have to hang on a tightrope and he shouldn’t have to,” Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said of Lehtonen. “I thought he was solid and gave us a shot to win.

“We didn’t take any penalties, we just had one, so we were the Boy Scouts of America today. We did all the little things. It wasn’t a pretty game to watch, but at the end of the day, you do enough of those in the right way, you’re going to get results and we got it.”

David Perron scored for St. Louis and Brian Elliott made 23 saves for the Blues.

The Blues lost for the first time in regulation in their past five road games (3-1-1) and are still 6-3-1 away from home.

“We had too many average performances. What can you say?” St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock said. “Too many average performances doesn’t get it done on the road.”

Elliott was making his first start since Feb. 11, a span of eight games, after a 0-4-1 record with a 4.67 goals-against average since the beginning of February.

“I thought he rebounded well there,” Blues defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk said of Elliott. “He came back in the second and third and he was the reason why we had a chance to win. I think he did a good job coming off a long break there. He hung with it.”

St. Louis appeared to tie the game at 2 at 8:59 of the final period, but it was waved off. After Lehtonen stopped Wade Redden’s wrist shot from the left point, the rebound bounced off rookie Adam Cracknell’s knee and was then directed into the net with his left skate.

“The league told us that the league ruled on it and they said the goal was conclusive that it wasn’t a goal from upstairs,” Hitchcock said of the call.

Eriksson got his seventh goal at 10:28 to give Dallas a two-goal edge, firing a wrist shot from low in the left faceoff circle between Elliott’s pads after receiving a nice cross-ice pass from Jordie Benn.

“It was a nice pass from Jordie and it was nice to see that go in, and definitely to get the win,” said Eriksson who has three goals in the past four games after getting just one in the previous 11. “That was nice.”

The Blues pulled Elliott for an extra attacker with 2:56 remaining, but a hooking penalty on Perron with 2:04 left put Dallas back on the power play.

Jagr capitalized with his seventh of the season with 59.3 seconds to go, drilling a one-timer from in front after receiving a nice backhand pass from Roy behind the net.

The Blues jumped on top just 4:20 into the opening period on Perron’s seventh goal of the season.

Seconds after a Jamie Benn giveaway in the Dallas zone, David Backes fed a cross-slot pass from the right faceoff circle to Perron, who made a nifty move to his backhand that faked Lehtonen to the ice as he stepped around him and tucked it inside the left post.

Before the puck even dropped for the ensuing faceoff, Dallas rookie Antoine Roussel challenged Chris Stewart to a fight in an attempt to fire up the Stars.

And while the Blues controlled play for much of the next 10 minutes, Roussel set up the equalizer at 15:59. His slick backhand pass from the right side of the crease found Cole in front for a one-timer that beat Elliott inside the left post.

Lehtonen kept the game tied with a nice save on T.J. Oshie’s wrist shot from the left circle with 2:26 left in the first.

Later on the same shift, an Oshie giveaway led to Roy’s third of the year with 1:40 remaining. Roy picked off Oshie’s pass inside the St. Louis blue line, worked his way to the left circle and fired a wrist shot that burrowed its way through Elliott’s right arm and dropped in for a 2-1 Dallas lead.

“I think Roussel’s fight gave us a lift,” Roy said. “They have big bodies and were working us down low, but Rous’s fight gave us a boost and after that, we got that goal by Cole and we took off after that.”

The Blues nearly tied it 2:42 into the second while on the power play, as Perron fired a wrist shot from the high slot that Lehtonen got enough of to deflect it just wide of the left post.

Elliott made a nice stop on Cole’s point-blank wrist shot at 7:55 with Dallas on the power play.

Lehtonen then came up big with a nice pad stop at 12:55, denying Cracknell’s deflection in front.

NOTES: Stars rookie D Brenden Dillon was a physical force, delivering a game-high 11 hits while logging 25:03 of ice time, much of it against the Blues’ top line. … Blues RW Adam Cracknell left the game with 7:12 remaining in the third period after crashing face-first into the boards during a collision with Stars D Jamie Oleksiak. He did not return. … The Stars honored Blues LW Jamie Langenbrunner, who played in Dallas from 1995-2002 and 2009-10, as part of the club’s all-time team. NEW YORK (AP) – The NHL has fined Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn $10,000 for cross-checking Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Jones from behind in a game on Thursday night.

With about four minutes left to play in the Oilers’ 5-1 win, Benn skated up to Jones from behind and cross-checked him in the upper back. Jones, who was heading to the penalty box for goaltender interference, dropped to the ice and stayed down for about two minutes before heading to the locker room.

It was a first-time offense for Benn, who was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for the cheap shot. The fine was the maximum for a first offender.

DALLAS (AP) - Dallas Stars forward Tom Wandell has cleared waivers and will remain with the team’s American Hockey League affiliate.

Wandell was with the Texas Stars on a conditioning assignment for two weeks before Friday’s move.

He played in the first seven games for Dallas but was a healthy scratch in nine straight before getting sent to the AHL.

The 26-year-old Wandell has 42 points in 218 career NHL games. He had 15 points in 72 games last season. He has four assists in four games with the Texas Stars this season.

DALLAS (AP) - With the puck bouncing their way, the Edmonton Oilers had no trouble notching a rare win in Dallas. Ales Hemsky scored a goal and two assists, Jeff Petry added a goal and an assist, and Devan Dubnyk made 33 saves in helping the Oilers roll to a 5-1 victory over the Stars on Thursday night.

The win snapped Edmonton’s six-game losing streak against the Stars, including two meetings earlier this season. The Oilers had been 1-10 in Dallas since Dec. 8, 2006.

“I think mathematically, we were due and when you look at the two games in Edmonton, we played well against Dallas and today we definitely had the bounces on our side,” Oilers coach Ralph Krueger said. “Devan Dubnyk played an outstanding game and it was an excellent overall game for the team.”

Sam Gagner, Justin Schultz and Ben Eager also scored for the Oilers, while Jordan Eberle and Lennart Petrell added two assists each.

“We’re not the same team we were in the past, so you can’t look at our record and think we’re going to have a tough time,” said Gagner, who had five shots on goal. “I think for us, for the guys that have been here, it’s always nice to come into a building you’ve had some trouble in and get a win. It’s a good feeling here tonight.”

Dallas gave the Oilers nine power plays on the night in losing for the third time in its last four home games.

“It was an odd night,” Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said. “They got a couple bounces early and the penalties didn’t allow us to get back in the game. This was a stinker.”

Jaromir Jagr scored Dallas’ goal, while Kari Lehtonen made 33 saves in his return to the Stars’ net after missing five games with a groin injury. He made a number of big saves and was victimized by two shots from the corner that deflected off teammates in front of him.

“It certainly wasn’t the way I wanted to come back and play,” said Lehtonen, who was activated off injured reserve on Wednesday. “It was good to play, but the result was awful. I wasn’t able to make too many of those key saves I need to make for us to win these games.”

Edmonton, on the second stop of a nine-game road trip, led 2-0 late in the second period before delivering the crushing blow on Petry’s second goal of the year with just 13.9 seconds left. Petry received a fortunate bounce when he backhanded the puck from the left corner into the crease, where it pinballed off Lehtonen’s stick, off Trevor Daley’s arm and over Lehtonen’s shoulder.

The Oilers increased the lead to four when Hemsky connected on a power play just 50 seconds into the third, retrieving a Dallas turnover in the high slot and unleashing a wrist shot that beat a screened Lehtonen over the shoulder.

“The last two games, they beat us in the third period. It was just different tonight,” said Hemsky, who leads Edmonton with eight goals on the season. “We didn’t spend too much energy chasing the puck the way we did a lot before, and you have more energy for offense, and I think that helped us.”

Eager made it 5-0 at 11:37 following another Stars turnover, blasting a one-timer from the right face-off circle past Lehtonen after a nice cross-ice pass from Lennart Petrell.

Jagr spoiled Dubnyk’s shutout bid with 5:55 remaining when his snap shot from the high slot found its way over Dubnyk’s glove.
Four different Oilers had to be helped off the ice during the game and the simmering hostilities came to a head with four minutes left when Dallas’ Jamie Benn was ejected for cross-checking Ryan Jones from behind. Jones, who had run into Lehtonen seconds earlier and was heading to the penalty box for goaltender interference, stayed down for about two minutes before heading to the locker room.

“Well, I’m sure they’re going to look at it. It’s not a suspendable offense in my mind,” Gulutzan said of the possibility Benn might be suspended. “The guy goes off looking at your bench kind of smirking, you’re probably all right. Not a high hit or a head hit.”

The Oilers struck first, as Gagner notched his sixth of the season just 1:13 into the opening period. Standing in the right corner, Gagner fired the puck into the crease, where it appeared to ricochet off Benn’s skate and past Lehtonen.

“We’ve talked a lot about getting pucks to the net and we were able to do that tonight,” said Gagner, who leads the Oilers with 19 points in 19 games. “Sometimes you get those types of bounces when you’re getting pucks into traffic there.”

The teams traded prime scoring opportunities off the rush starting at 8:43 when Dubnyk made a nice pad save on Stephane Robidas’ one-timer from the high slot.

Seconds later, Petry raced into the Dallas zone with Taylor Hall on a 2-on-1 rush, and Lehtonen got just enough of his wrist shot to deflect the puck just wide of the right post.

Schultz made it 2-0 Edmonton at 13:52 when he sneaked into the slot and received Eberle’s beautiful saucer pass from the left corner for a one-timer that fluttered over the sliding Lehtonen’s pad and under his glove.

The Oilers had a great chance to go up by three when back-to-back boarding penalties on the Stars gave Edmonton a 5-on-3 power play for 1:03 that carried into the second period. They had several opportunities, but Lehtonen made sparkling saves in succession on Gagner’s one-timer, Schultz’s wrist shot and Ryan Smyth’s point-blank wrister.

Dallas then had three consecutive power plays through the second period, but came up empty-handed.

With the clubs skating four aside with 4:24 left, rookie defenseman Brenden Dillon took off on a breakaway, but Dubnyk slid out and stacked the pads to deny Dillon’s wrist shot from the slot.

A too many men on the ice penalty against Dallas less than a minute later gave the Oilers another 5-on-3 advantage, but again they couldn’t cash in.

NOTES: LW Erik Cole made his Dallas debut, registering one shot on goal and a -2 plus/minus rating. Cole was acquired by the Stars on Tuesday from Montreal in exchange for Michael Ryder and a 2013 third-round draft choice. … Edmonton LW Taylor Hall was back in the lineup after serving a two-game suspension for kneeing Minnesota’s Cal Clutterbuck on Feb. 21. … Oilers D Corey Potter left the contest late in the first period after he was leveled by a hit from Dallas’ Eric Nystrom and did not return. … The Stars honored former RW Jere Lehtinen, who played in Dallas from 1995-2010 and ranks among the top five in franchise history in virtually every offensive category, as part of the squad’s all-time team.

Stars Activate Goalie Kari Lehtonen

DALLAS (AP) – The Dallas Stars have activated Kari Lehtonen from the injured list, and the goalie says he expects to play Thursday against Edmonton.

Lehtonen has missed five games because of a groin injury after leaving in the first period of a 4-3 win over Vancouver on Feb. 15.

The 29-year-old Lehtonen from Finland was among the NHL leaders in wins when he was injured. He is 7-2-1 with a 2.12 goals-against average and a .934 save percentage.

To make room on the roster, the Stars sent goalie Cristopher Nilstorp to Texas of the American Hockey League. Nilstorp is 1-3-1 with Dallas and 17-10-5 with Texas this season.

NHL Reveals New Realignment Proposal

NEW YORK (Sports Network) - The National Hockey League on Tuesday revealed a tweaked realignment plan, one which is based off a proposal which had been originally struck down by the NHLPA.

The new plan calls for four groupings based primarily on geographic proximity, split into Atlantic, Central, Midwest and Pacific Divisions, while retaining the names for both the Eastern and Western Conferences.

According to the memo circulated amongst the 30 teams, the breakdown for the new divisions is expected to be:

- Carolina, Columbus, New Jersey, the Islanders, Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington in the Atlantic.

- Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Florida and Tampa Bay in the Central.

- Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis and Winnipeg in the Midwest.

- Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, San Jose, Los Angeles and Phoenix for the Pacific.

An altered schedule matrix would see each team play teams in the other conference both home and away.

In the seven-team divisions, teams would play intraconference foes three times per season and five of the six intradivision foes five times a season. The sixth opponent within the division would be played four times. In the eight- team divisions, teams would play intraconference opponents three times and intradivision opponents either four or five times per season on a rotating basis.

One new wrinkle to the postseason would be the introduction of a wild card. Under the latest proposal, the top three teams in each of the four divisions will qualify for the postseason. The final four spots would go to the two teams in each conference with the next-best records. In theory, five teams from one division and just three from the other division in each respective conference could make the playoffs.

If approved by both sides, the new format will be in place for the 2013-14 season.

“We have been in discussions with the Players’ Association for the past several weeks on the issue of realignment and we are trying to get to a solution that everybody can live with,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told NHL.com. “There are no perfect answers here, so we have to do the best we can in trying to adequately address a number of competing concerns. Once we get to a point where we have the union’s go-ahead, we will present it to our Board of Governors for its consideration. We certainly hope to be in a position to announce something in the relatively near term.”

The BOG had voted to eliminate the two-conference, six-division model and implement a new format for the 2012-13 season in January of 2012, but significant opposition from the players’ union plus the onset of the latest lockout in September tabled that discussion.

The original format called for four conferences — two with eight teams and two with seven. The realignment would have allowed each team to play every other team at least twice every season, once at home and once on the road.

The breakdown for the unnamed conferences would have been:

- Anaheim, Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose and Vancouver.

- Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis and Winnipeg.

- Boston, Buffalo, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay and Toronto.

- Carolina, New Jersey, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington.

The top four teams in each conference would have made the playoffs and the first two postseason rounds would have been played within the conference, with the first-place team facing the fourth-place club and the second-place team playing the third-place team in the opening round.

The winners within the conference would then have battled each other in the second round and the four conference champions would have clashed in the third round, with the winners meeting in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Eriksson’s Goal Lifts Stars Past Blue Jackets In OT

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Loui Eriksson said the game was no work of art — unless you can mold a masterpiece out of hard work, muscle and grit.

Eriksson fought off two defenders to get his stick on a rebound and jammed it in 3:03 into overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 5-4 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game,” Eriksson said. “But we’ll take the two points and move forward.”

Eriksson was being held back by a pair of Blue Jackets but reached for the puck as he was falling. Before collapsing on the ice, he whipped it past goalie Sergei Bobrovsky for the winner.

Cody Eakin had given the Stars a 4-3 lead with 6:24 left in regulation when his shot from the right wing handcuffed Bobrovsky, the puck trickling through his leg pads and across the goal line.

But the Blue Jackets once again tied it — for the fourth time — when Nick Foligno tossed a hard pass from the left short boards to R.J. Umberger, who scored from the right hash with just 1:34 remaining to force overtime.

“That was a back-and-forth game, like a ping-pong game,” said Dallas’ Antoine Roussel, who like Eakin and Derek Roy had an assist to go with his goal.

Brenden Morrow also scored, and Stephane Robidas and Brenden Dillon each had two assists for the Stars, who had lost three of four coming in.

“I thought we had some jump tonight,” coach Glen Gulutzan said. “We limited their chances. The four goals (surrendered) we didn’t like, but the shots were 39-20. We played a good road game.”

It was a rare second-night win for the Stars. They came in just 1-15-2 in the second game of their past 18 back-to-backs dating to last season.

“I’m sure you’ll keep bringing that up,” Gulutzan half-joked with reporters. “It wasn’t easy. That is a hard-working (Columbus) team. It was good to win.”

Cam Atkinson, Nikita Nikitin and Derek Dorsett also had goals for Columbus, which opened a stretch with 10 of the next 12 games coming at home. But the Blue Jackets still ran out of comebacks to lose their third in a row overall and sixth in seven games.

“We kept coming. I don’t think that’s ever been a question about this team this year,” Umberger said. “The problem is we’re just playing from behind too much. It’s hard to play catch-up. But when we do get down, we’re not quitting and that’s a positive.”
Foligno and Mark Letestu each had two assists for Columbus.

Just before the start, the Stars dealt right wing Michael Ryder and a third-round pick to Montreal for right wing Erik Cole in a swap of veteran forwards. The move came less than 24 hours after Ryder posted the first three-assist game of his career.

The Blue Jackets were without four of their top players: centers Brandon Dubinsky (knee) and Artem Anisimov (concussion), and defensemen James Wisniewski (broken foot) and Jack Johnson (shoulder). And they lost another top-line center (Derick Brassard) to injury during the game.

“I’ve been a part of games where you play well and lose, and ones where you didn’t play well and you won,” Columbus coach Todd Richards said. “I thought we tried. We didn’t have the energy we needed and I don’t think they (the Stars) did, either. We just did some things that’ll get you into trouble.”

Down 3-2 going into the third, the Blue Jackets got some puck luck to tie it.

Adrian Aucoin’s shot ricocheted off a Stars player in the crease and ended up in front of Atkinson on the edge of the left circle. He lifted the puck to beat Richard Bachman for his second of the second to square it.

Eriksson said Umberger’s late goal could have been the Stars’ undoing.

“It’s always tough when you lose the lead like that,” he said. “We have to be better than that. But today we found a way to win.”

NOTES: Ryder had points in his final six games (2-7-9) with the Stars. …The Blue Jackets have killed off their last 11 penalties over four games. … Morrow’s goal 5 minutes after the start gave him 242 as a Star, moving him within one of second-place Jere Lehtinen on the franchise scoring list, well behind leader Mike Modano’s 434. … The Stars have scored at least three goals in each of their last 11 games. … Columbus has the worst record in the NHL (5-12-3, 13 points).

Stars Send Ryder To Montreal For Cole

COLUMBUS, OH (AP) - Less than 24 hours after picking up a career-best three assists in a loss at Nashville, the Dallas Stars have dealt right wing Michael Ryder and a third-round draft pick to the Montreal Canadiens for right wing Erik Cole in a swap of veteran forwards.

The Canadiens confirmed the trade Tuesday night.

The 32-year-old Ryder has six goals and eight assists in 19 games this year for the Stars. The 24-year-old Cole has three goals and three assists in 19 games for the Canadiens.

Ryder will be returning to the organization that drafted him in the eighth round (216th overall) of the 1998 draft.

The deal was announced just before the Stars took the ice to play the Columbus Blue Jackets.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Blood oozed down Predators captain Shea Weber’s face after a high stick clipped him close to his nose, though officials didn’t call a penalty.

So his teammates helped him take out his pain on the Dallas Stars.

Roman Josi scored his second goal 28 seconds into overtime and the Predators rallied from a 4-2 deficit to beat the Stars 5-4 Monday night in a wild game featuring several fights, six goals and Weber’s bloodied face — all in the second period.

“There was a lot of blood,” Nashville coach Barry Trotz said.

Dallas had just gone up 4-2 nearly midway through the second when Weber was caught with a high stick. Replays made it tough to tell if it was Predators forward Martin Erat’s stick or Stars right wing Jaromir Jagr’s stick inflicting the damage. Trotz hadn’t seen a replay, but he said his players thought it was a Dallas stick that did the damage.

“They turned that sort of negative energy into real positive energy, and we fed off of that,” Trotz said.

Weber finished with two assists, including on Josi’s slap shot in overtime that helped Nashville end a two-game skid. Josi also had two assists as the Predators played their 10th OT game this season — an NHL high. They have earned a point in 14 of the 15 games they’ve scored a goal.

“I just tried to get it to the net,” Josi said of his winner. “I saw three guys joined already so I tried to be the safety guy and back up a little. Sergei (Kostitsyn) made a great play to me and tried to get it to the net, and I think the Dallas defenseman tipped it.”

Mike Fisher, Craig Smith and Patric Hornqvist each scored for Nashville. The last two losses had been shutouts, and the Predators ended a scoring drought at 133:43 after threatening the franchise-worst drought that reached 176:18 on Feb. 13 in an overtime win over San Jose.

Rookie Matt Fraser and Reilly Smith scored 25 seconds apart within the first 2 minutes of the second, and Vern Fiddler and Eriksson each added a power-play goal as the Stars matched their season high within the first 9:21 of the period. Michael Ryder had three assists.

Nashville had lost four of its past five and needed a win before hitting the road for a three-game swing on the West Coast.
Fisher tied it at 8:22 of the third when he got the puck as he skated into the Nashville zone, split a pair of Stars and beat Cristopher Nilstorp with a backhander. Nashville wound up outshooting the Stars 31-24, including 11-4 in the third.

“There were some emotions and some good hits and a lot of energy,” Fisher said. “It was a great game.”

Smith ended Nashville’s scoring drought at 133:43 when he snapped a shot from in front in a relatively quiet first period.

The action cranked up in the second with six goals combined, fights, and that high stick leaving Weber with blood dripping down the left side of his face in his 500th career game. The blow dropped Weber to the ice, and he lost his stick. But he wound up checking Stars forward Matt Fraser at the boards before heading to the bench.

“Emotionally that sometimes can be very good,” Trotz said.

Dallas had scored at least three goals the previous nine straight games, and the Stars took a 2-1 lead as Fraser got his first career goal on a slap shot from the left circle at 1:20. Then Reilly Smith tipped the puck over goalie Pekka Rinne’s left leg at 1:45 for a 2-1 lead.

Trotz immediately took his timeout, and the Predators responded when Josi tied it at 2 with his slap shot near the blue line at 3:05.

The Predators were trying to kill a holding penalty on Erat when the Stars drew a delayed penalty off a high-stick by Fisher, and Fiddler, coming on as the extra attacker, scored on a slap shot at 7:29.

With Fisher drawing a double minor, the Stars’ man advantage continued, and Erikkson scored with the puck redirected past Rinne by Josi at 9:21.

“It’s never over with these guys,” Stars forward Stephane Robidas said.

The Predators trimmed the lead when they went 1:21 with of a 5-on-3 after Eric Nystrom went to the box for fighting with a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Then Fiddler got his own double minor for unsportsmanlike conduct and roughing.

Nashville had only 2 seconds left when Hornqivst lifted a backhander over Nilstorp at 13:43 to pull the Predators within 4-3.
Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan wasn’t happy with how his Stars reacted to being up 4-2.

“We needed to stay disciplined,” Gulutzan said. “After the double minor for high sticking, they are going to look for something on you and you can’t give up a 5-on-3. You can’t take that penalty. We just didn’t have a game feel. We let them in, and we got them excited. We needed to make sure we closed them out.”

Notes: Weber is the sixth to play 500 games for the Predators. DALLAS (AP) - The Vancouver Canucks used a third-period rally to stop their losing streak.

Jason Garrison and Henrik Sedin scored third-period goals to help the Canucks overcome a 2-1 second-period deficit en route to a 4-3 victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday.

Alex Burrows and Kevin Bieksa also scored for the Canucks, who ended a three-game losing streak (0-1-2), including a 4-3 decision to the Stars in which they squandered a 3-1 lead in Vancouver on Feb. 15.

“I think it was important for our team to put together a better two-way effort and I thought we did that tonight,” Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said. “Even though we started off on our heels a little bit, I thought the guys responded after that.”

And despite giving up the first goal just 35 seconds into the game, Cory Schneider bounced back and made 22 saves for the win.

“It’s never good to give up a goal in the first minute of the game, so it was good to show some resilience and we didn’t crack under that,” Schneider said. “It was nice to sort of return the favor and come back on them a couple of times in their building.”

Jamie Benn, Michael Ryder and Brenden Morrow scored for Dallas, which lost for the third time in its past four games.

“I thought that we had chances to get ahead and maybe stay ahead, but we didn’t convert,” Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said. “But overall, I thought that our work ethic was strong tonight and we improved certainly some of the things we’ve had for a couple of days in practice but it’s a result-based business and we didn’t get the result.”

Cristopher Nilstorp, who was recalled from AHL Texas on Sunday, stopped 18 shots.

“I think we played a really good game. The guys battled hard,” said Nilstorp, who is 0-3-0 in his first three NHL starts. “This is a game where you deserved points, but this is hockey and sometimes you play well but you don’t get the points, and this is one of those games. It’s kind of frustrating.”

The Canucks broke a 2-2 tie by scoring twice within a 1:46 span early in the third period.

Garrison snapped the tie at 2:32 when his slap shot from the left point beat a screened Nilstorp over the blocker for his second goal of the season, giving the Canucks their first lead of the game.

Henrik Sedin got his second of the season at 4:18, completing a pretty passing play with Burrows on a 2-on-1 rush with an easy tap-in into an open net to make it 4-2.

Dallas pulled within one at 6:07 of the third, when Morrow stripped the puck off Ryan Kesler’s stick in front of the Canucks’ goal and quickly swept it past Schneider for his fourth goal.

“Obviously that was a tough bounce on that last one, it’s completely my fault,” said Kesler, who had two assists. “Bad bounce, bad luck, whatever you want to chalk it up to, but I’ll take credit for that one. I told Schneids that one’s on me.”

The Stars had a late power-play opportunity when Bieksa was whistled for interference at 14:51, but Dallas was unable to muster a shot on goal during the advantage.

A Derek Roy hooking penalty with 2:01 remaining effectively negated any chance Dallas had at mounting a late comeback.

“Well, we just wanted to get that (equalizer),” said Benn, who has five goals in the past eight games. “They’re not easy to score, those goals. We kind of take a penalty in there and shoot ourselves in the foot.”
Benn put the Stars on top just 35 seconds into the opening period with a spectacular goal, his fifth of the season.

After picking up the puck at the left point, Benn stickhandled his way through four Canucks, working his way to the right side of the crease before lifting a wrist shot through a tiny opening over Schneider’s shoulder.

“He’s such a dangerous player,” Schneider said. “He’s unpredictable, you don’t know if he’s going to shoot or make a move like that.”

Vancouver tied it at 1 on Burrows’ power-play goal at 8:29. Seconds after Daniel Sedin clanked a one-timer off the crossbar, Burrows camped out in front of the net and managed to deflect Alexander Edler’s shot from the left point past Nilstorp.

Ryder’s fifth of the season — and first in nine games — pushed the Stars back in front at 2:39 of the second. Just seconds after Nilstorp made a nice pad save on David Booth’s wrist shot, the Stars raced down the other end and Ryder wound up with the puck in the slot. His backhand found its way through a screen in front and beat Schneider through the pads.

The Canucks tied it again at 7:05 when Bieksa notched his fifth goal. With the teams skating 4-on-4, Bieksa beat the Stars’ defense, held off a poke-check attempt from Philip Larsen and slid a backhand through Nilstorp’s pads.

“It was a bad goal, that second one. Everyone could see that,” said Nilstorp. “But you have to move on and focus on the next shot.”

Each goaltender made outstanding saves later in the second to keep the game at 2-2. Schneider made a nice skate save on Benn at 12:55 and Nilstorp denied Burrows’ breakaway attempt at 17:35.

“I saw him at the side, thought maybe he would tip it and sure enough, he pulls it,” Schneider said. “Somehow I swung my leg around and got a toe on it. It was a little bit of luck, but I was able to stay with him.”

Stars Send Wandell To Rehab Stint

DALLAS (AP) - The Dallas Stars have sent forward Tom Wandell on a conditioning assignment to Texas of the American Hockey League and recalled defenseman Jordie Benn and forward Matt Fraser.

Wandell has played in seven games for Dallas this season, recording four penalty minutes with nine shots.

Benn has appeared in 40 games for the Texas Stars and has 11 career NHL appearances, eight of them this season. He last skated for Dallas on Feb. 1.

Fraser is tied for third in the AHL with 24 goals and has appeared in 51 games for Texas this season. He played his first career NHL game Jan. 24 against Anaheim.

Forward Tomas Vincour was also assigned to Texas. He has a goal in eight games with Dallas this season.

DALLAS (AP) – Just when it looked like the Dallas Stars were rolling, the Calgary Flames battled back, capitalizing on their grit and depth.

Steve Begin, Matt Stajan and Roman Horak each scored their first goals of the season in the third period and the Calgary Flames overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat the Dallas Stars 4-3 Sunday night.

“It feels good, but the most important thing is we came out with two points,” said Begin, who sat out all of last season with a hip injury and hadn’t scored since the 2010 playoffs. “We needed those points and that’s a huge win. We’ve got to be proud of ourselves but we’ve got to bring the same intensity for the next few games.”

Begin snapped a 3-3 tie with 9:30 remaining. After Chris Butler’s slap shot from the left point was blocked in front, Begin outbattled two Stars defenders to get to the loose puck and fire a wrister that beat goaltender Richard Bachman.

“I didn’t see the initial shot,” Bachman said. “There were a lot of bodies in front, it kind of bounced around and kicked out to my right, and as soon as I saw that, the first instinct’s to get the pad down, try and seal the ice. He kind of spun around and he got a little elevation on it.”

It was the Flames’ second victory over the Stars in five days, having won 7-4 in Calgary on Wednesday.

“We showed lots of character. I’m very proud of our players,” said Flames coach Bob Hartley, whose club is 3-1-1 on the road this year. “We had a good talk after the second period. I told them if we want to build some foundation to be a playoff team, it’s games like this that we need to win.”

Michael Cammalleri also scored for Calgary, while Joey MacDonald made 27 saves for his first win while making his first start and second appearance overall for the Flames since he was claimed off waivers from Detroit on Feb. 11.

“It’s been a long time and it’s been frustrating, ups and downs, good days, bad days,” said MacDonald, who last won an NHL game on March 9, 2012. “But tonight 30 shots, I felt pretty good in there for not playing in a while.”

Antoine Roussel, Reilly Smith and Ryan Garbutt scored second-period goals for Dallas, while Bachman stopped 22 shots five days after he gave up six goals on 22 shots in Calgary.

Coming off an emotional 4-3 comeback triumph in Vancouver on Friday, the Stars were upset to have let this one slip away.

“It’s very frustrating,” said Smith, who scored for the second straight game. “With the big win in Vancouver, it’s kind of not worth it anymore because with those two points that we should have had tonight, we let them go.”

The result was particularly frustrating for the Stars because they reversed a disturbing trend that has plagued them this season by taking control of the contest with a strong second period, scoring three goals while outshooting Calgary 22-12, establishing a new season high for shots in a period. Over their first 15 contests, Dallas had been outscored 20-12 in middle frame.

“It’s very disappointing, very disappointing that we didn’t come out with two points here at home,” Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said. “We needed to be stronger in front of our net. You got to be battle-ready for 60 minutes. I think we just lost some battles.”

With the Stars up 3-1 early in the final period, the Flames pulled even with two goals within a 45-second stretch that quieted the 17,340 in attendance.

First, Horak scored at 1:39 of the third, banging home a point-blank rebound after Bachman made a pad save on Jay Bouwmeester’s wrist shot.

Stajan tied it at 2:24 after Lee Stempniak fed a backhand pass from behind the net out front, where Stajan drilled a one-timer past Bachman’s glove.

“Our forechecking was much better, but more importantly we put pucks at the net with traffic and we found those loose pucks,” Hartley said of the third period. “A great play by Stempniak on that short pass to Stajan. Tonight we had three huge goals in that third period.”

Trailing 1-0 early in the second period, the Stars struck twice within 56 seconds to surge ahead 2-1.

Roussel tied it just 1:51 in, camping out in front to screen MacDonald and re-directing Cody Eakin’s high, floating wrister over MacDonald’s glove. The goal was originally credited to Eakin, but replays clearly showed the puck glancing off Roussel for his third of the year and second in the last two games.

Smith then recorded his second goal in as many games when he corralled his own rebound and lifted a backhander from the edge of the crease over a prone MacDonald at 2:47.

“I’m getting more comfortable every day,” said Smith, a 21-year-old rookie who went scoreless in his first 12 games. “It was a tough start to the year, and I wanted to help the team a little bit more offensively. But everything’s kind of happening for me out there right now.”

The Stars made it 3-1 with 4:37 left in the second on Garbutt’s third of the year. MacDonald made a pad save on Stephane Robidas’ wrist shot from the left circle, but Garbutt pounced on the rebound and popped it over MacDonald’s pad.

Garbutt, who fought Begin in the first period, now has three points (two goals, one assist) in four games since he sat out three in a row as a healthy scratch.

Calgary jumped on top 1-0 at 8:11 of the opening period when Cammalleri notched his fourth goal of the season — all have come against Dallas. With the Flames still on a power play, and just 6 seconds after a 5-on-3 advantage expired, Cammalleri fired a wrist shot from a sharp angle to the right of the net and it slipped under Bachman’s blocker and went in.

NOTES: The loss for the Stars snapped a 79-game streak in which they hadn’t lost in regulation after taking a lead into the third period, going 71-0-8 since falling to Nashville on Oct. 31, 2009. . Dallas D Trevor Daley left the contest after the second period with an upper body injury and did not return. He will be re-evaluated on Monday. … Cammalleri continued his recent success against Dallas. He had a hat trick against the Stars in the Flames’ 7-4 win Wednesday and now has 11 points (seven goals, four assists) in the last five meetings between the clubs. Overall, since missing three games with a lower body injury, he has collected four goals and two assists in the last three contests. … Stars G Kari Lehtonen was placed on the injured list Sunday, retroactive to Friday, with a groin injury. He had to come out of the Stars’ 4-3 win over Vancouver. He is not expected to be out more than the week he is required to spend on injured reserve.

DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Stars have promoted goalie Cristopher Nilstorp from the American Hockey League a night after starter Kari Lehtonen left a game with an injury.

Nilstorp was 0-2 in a pair of starts for Dallas before being sent down to the Texas Stars earlier this month. He has a 2.17 goals-against average in 31 games with the Texas Stars.

Lehtonen left in the first period of Friday’s 4-3 win at Vancouver with a lower-body injury. The Stars said he would re-evaluated Saturday. Richard Bachman replaced Lehtonen.

Nilstorp, who turned 29 Saturday, lost a pair of early-season games against Minnesota and St. Louis. He injured a groin against the Blues and went down to the Texas Stars when he was activated from the injured list.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Brenden Dillon doesn’t cheer for the Vancouver Canucks anymore.

Playing his first NHL game in his hometown, the 22-year-old defenseman scored the go-ahead goal with 3 minutes left in the third period and the Dallas Stars rallied past Vancouver 4-3 on Friday night to end the Canucks’ six-game winning streak.

“It’s awesome to (score the winner) in front of friends and family,” Dillon said. “This is my first trip here to play in front of Rogers Arena — ever. I grew up watching guys like (Daniel and Henrik Sedin), guys like (Roberto) Luongo.”

Dillon stole the show and spoiled a record-setting night for Henrik Sedin after the Vancouver captain became the club’s career scoring leader. He had two assists to give him 757 points, one more than Markus Naslund. The former teammates are from the same hometown of Ornskoldsvik, Sweden.

After he broke the mark, the crowd gave Henrik Sedin an extended standing ovation — even while he sat on the bench, then when he went back on the ice and during a TV timeout. During the break, the Canucks aired a video saluting him, with Naslund offering his congratulations.

Henrik Sedin responded by raising his stick and clapping in support of the crowd.

“I don’t know if I should be telling too many people that I’ve got (posters) of (former Canuck) Pavel Bure and the Sedins on my wall back home,” Dillon said. “But it was definitely a pretty cool experience to come in here and play these guys. It was an even better feeling to get the win tonight.”

Reilly Smith, Cody Eakin and Antoine Roussel also scored for the Stars, who overcame a 3-1 deficit to win for the fifth time in six games. Backup goalie Richard Bachman rebounded from a rough start and earned the victory in relief of injured Kari Lehtonen.

Daniel Sedin, Chris Higgins and Alex Burrows had goals for the Canucks.

Dillon, from the Vancouver suburb of Surrey, B.C., toiled for Texas of the AHL during the NHL lockout and played only one game for Dallas last season. He gave the Stars the lead for the first time when he slid behind coverage from his defensive position and fired Jamie Benn’s cross-ice pass into the top corner of the net.

“It was a great play by Benn,” Dillon said. “It was right on my stick and it was awesome.”

The goal was his third of the season — and his career — but he said it meant more than the first one. The winning goal Friday came before 15-20 friends and family members, whose tickets were purchased by Dillon.

“Good thing we got paid today, because I was running short (of cash) after I bought those tickets,” he said.

Dillon was on the ice for Higgins’ goal. Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said the rookie made up for a slow start.

“I thought that early on he was a little tentative,” Gulutzan said. “But then he settled in and scored a huge goal for us.

“When you’re talking young defensemen playing against some of the best players in the world on this ice right now, I think he did a pretty good job of settling himself in. … I’m proud of the way he battled back in this game.”

Lehtonen left in the first period after stopping all seven shots he faced. Gulutzan said the goalie had a lower-body injury and will be re-evaluated when the team returns to Dallas.

After allowing three goals on the first six shots he faced, Bachman stopped 15 straight shots to finish with 21 saves.

“It’s never fun coming in cold,” Bachman said. “That’s a good team with a lot of skill, and they started running especially at the end of the second period, and then we started knocking.

“You just try to stay calm and forget about everything that’s going on.”

Dallas outshot Vancouver 29-28. The Stars were blanked on four power plays, while the Canucks could not convert on three.

“I don’t really know what happened,” Henrik Sedin said. “We played a good game up to the halfway point and then they took over. Giving up four goals 5-on-5, that never happens with this team. Even though they had a few fortunate bounces, they took over the game.”

Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said goalie Cory Schneider would have liked to have a couple of the Dallas goals back, but his teammates did not support him offensively.

“He’s bailed us out so many times before that we need to find ways to be able to win those games when the opportunity is there,” Vigneault said. “The opportunity was there and we didn’t do it.”

The loss also spoiled the return of Canucks center Ryan Kesler from shoulder and wrist surgery. He had an assist in his first game since last year’s playoffs.

NOTES: Three fights occurred 3 seconds apart in the second period. In the middle bout, former Ivy League teammates Aaron Volpatti of Vancouver and Ryan Garbutt of Dallas squared off. Volpatti and Garbutt played together during three seasons at Brown. … Dallas wing Ray Whitney, 40, sat out his seventh straight game with a foot injury. … Stars forward Jaromir Jagr turned 41. … Canucks defensemen Andrew Alberts and Cam Barker were scratched for the 13th straight game. No Decision Yet On NHL Players In Olympics

NEW YORK (AP) – A decision on whether NHL players will head to the 2014 Sochi Olympics isn’t likely this week.

Discussions were set for Thursday and Friday between the NHL, the NHL players’ association, and officials from the International Ice Hockey Federation and the International Olympic Committee to see if it makes sense for North American professional hockey players to go to the Olympics for a fifth straight time.

“I don’t expect any resolution or decisions this week,” NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told The Associated Press in an email on Thursday.

The Sochi Games are one year away. While a final decision isn’t required this week, one will have to be reached in the near future. It is believed hockey federations will need to know by May what players will be available for their teams.

The current discussions are being held between NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr, IIHL President Rene Fasel and officials from the IOC.

After enduring a long lockout that produced a shortened regular season this year, the NHL is weighing whether it is worth shutting down the game for more than two weeks next season to allow its players to go to Russia for the Olympics.

The time difference will force the games to be played at off hours in North America, and the NHL would like to receive concessions from the IOC that haven’t been made before.

In return for sending its players to the Sochi Olympics, the NHL is trying to acquire video, photograph and Web site rights for the games. The IIHF and the IOC retain those exclusive rights now.

The NHL began sending its players to the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan, and continued through the 2010 Vancouver Games. Even though the NHL got great exposure by having its players take part in an Olympics in North America, disrupting the season does come with a cost.

The stopping of the season, the potential injury risk to players, and no tangible upside for the NHL are all factors that create doubt whether the investment is good for the league.

One topic that isn’t on the agenda during this week’s meetings is NHL realignment.

The relocation of the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg before last season has created travel troubles for the Jets and their Southeast Division rivals that need to be resolved.

The league’s board of governors thought it had the problem settled when a realignment plan that would change the current system from six divisions to four conferences was formed in December 2011. But the players’ association rejected the plan, leaving all clubs in place for this season.

The union turned down the proposal because of travel concerns and potential unfair playoff qualifications. League and players’ association representatives met in Toronto this week, and the hope is a new plan will be ready to present to the board of governors by the end of February.

This time, it is expected that the players will sign off on the plan before it goes to the board for a vote.

Neither the Olympic issue nor realignment were addressed in the new collective bargaining agreement that ended the lockout.

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Back in action after missing three games with an injury, Mike Cammalleri had milestone night.

Cammalleri scored three goals, including the 200th of his career, in his return from a hip injury to help the Calgary Flames beat the Dallas Stars 7-4 on Wednesday night.

“It’s special for sure,” said Cammalleri, who also had an assist. “I truly feel I’m living a dream come true playing in this league. Stuff like that makes you sometimes reflect a little bit and you appreciate what we do.”

The seven goals were a season high for the Flames, who had scored four goals four times.

“We liked the energy we brought tonight and with that came some offensive production which was nice,” Cammalleri said. “As a group you want to build on something like this. We’re capable of breaking games when we want to.”

Roman Czervenka added a goal and an assist, and Jay Bouwmeester and Jiri Hudler also scored. Alex Tanguay, Lee Stempniak and Jarome Iginla each had two assists, and Leland Irving made 30 saves to improve to 2-1-1.

Brendan Morrow scored twice for the Stars, Eric Nystrom and Cody Eakin added goals, and Jaromir Jagr had two assists. The Stars had won four straight, including a 4-1 victory in Edmonton on Tuesday night.

Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan wasn’t happy with his team’s lackluster start.

“I don’t know if we weren’t ready as much as we weren’t ready to compete,” Gulutzan said. “We were soft in the beginning, soft with our sticks, soft with our play. We weren’t ready. I thought (the Flames) played a solid game, but I didn’t think they came guns a’blazin’. I thought we were just soft.”

Dallas goalie Richard Bachman made 16 saves in his second start of the season.

Bouwmeester opened the scoring at 3:11 of the first period, creeping in off the point to swat a loose puck past Bachman. The Stars had a great chance to tie up the game a short time later, but Irving made a great paddle save to deny a short-handed attempt by Ryan Garbutt.

At the other end on the same power play, Hudler one-timed a shot from the slot by Bachman to finish off a three-way passing play. Cammalleri added another power-play goal for the Flames, before Nystrom connected for the Stars. Czervenka then converted a feed from Tanguay to put the Flames up 4-1.

“We were always one or two steps behind,” Jagr said. “Next time we have to play a little bit better especially when we play back-to-back games and the other team have a rest. We can’t just give it to them in the first period.”

Just 45 seconds into the second period, Morrow scored during a Dallas power play. Cammalleri added his second of the game at 3:23 of the second, and Morrow swatted a loose puck past Irving 24 seconds later.

Shortly after Czervenka rang a shot off the crossbar, Glencross tapped a great pass from Iginla into the Dallas net behind a sprawling Bachman to give Calgary a 6-3 lead.

With Matt Stajan already in the penalty box for tripping, Calgary defenseman Dennis Wideman was assessed a delay-of-game penalty late in the second for smothering the puck with his hand to give the Stars a 5-on-3 power play for 59 seconds. While the Stars didn’t cash in during the two-man advantage, Eakin scored with Wideman still in the box 1:05 into the third to pull Dallas within two goals.

Cammalleri completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal.

NOTES: Calgary forward Paul Byron left the game in the first period with a fractured left hand. Byron was called up from the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat a day earlier to play his first NHL game of the season. … The Flames chose Irving 26th overall in the first round of the 2006 draft, while the Stars took Bachman 120th overall in the fourth round that year.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Dallas has had little trouble winning in Edmonton over the last few years, so the last thing the Oilers needed was to surrender a couple of fluke goals as well.

Kari Lehtonen made 35 saves and Brenden Dillon and Eric Nystrom both scored strange goals as the Dallas Stars extended their winning streak to four games with a 4-1 victory over the Oilers on Tuesday.

“We got two pretty lucky goals today, just amazing bounces,” said Lehtonen of his team’s first two goals. “(Oilers goalie Devan) Dubnyk was playing great. He had a shutout going on in my mind until the last two goals.

“He had no business having those first two go in on him.”

The Stars tied the game 1-1 four minutes into the second period as a shot by Dillon caromed off a stick and then the glass behind the net and hit Dubnyk in the back and bounced into the goal.

“It was a weird play… it happens,” Dubnyk said. “There is nothing I can do about it.”

Both teams had some very good scoring chances in the second, the best one coming at the end when Jordan Eberle made a nice deke on the power play that Lehtonen was barely able to deflect with his toe.

Dallas got another gift goal just 44 seconds into the third period as a long shot by Nystrom hit the hand of one of the Oilers on its way to the net, then appeared to strike Dubnyk in the mask before hitting the post and going in to make it 2-1 for the Stars.
Jaromir Jagr and Ryan Garbutt also scored for Dallas, which has won five of its last six games overall.

The Stars have been incredibly successful against the Oilers since moving to Dallas, now holding a 55-13-4-2 record against Edmonton.

“It’s up to us how well we do,” Jagr said. “I don’t think we have the kind of team that can allow itself to play up and down hockey.

We are a good cycling team and we have the goaltending. Some of our games aren’t going to be pretty, but as long as we win it is fine.”

Taylor Hall replied for the Oilers, who have lost six of their last seven.

Oilers coach Ralph Krueger said it was a case of some awful luck erasing what was otherwise a good effort.

“Those first two goals were two of the most bizarre goals I’ve seen in a long time and back to back that way was tough for us to swallow,” he said. “The result was painful to look at when you look at our execution for most of the game. For the first two periods it looked like we were going to have our first real 60-minute game of the season. That second goal seemed to deflate us.
“We went back to some complicated habits after that and abandoned what had made us successful to that point.”

Hall agreed that it was a much better effort than in the Oilers’ 3-1 win over Columbus on Sunday, a game where they were outshot 40-14.

“In Columbus we didn’t deserve the win and didn’t play well,” he said. “The way we played tonight is going to win us games.”
Dallas had the best chance early as Cody Eakin had a partial breakaway but was stopped by a nice pad save from Dubnyk, who finished with 25 saves.

Edmonton got on the board first with seven minutes to play in the first period as Hall unleashed a deceptive off-stride wrist shot from the top of the circle that beat Lehtonen to the glove side.

The Oilers had another good chance to score with six minutes to play in the third on a power play but Lehtonen was once again there to rob Ryan Nugent-Hopkins with a glove save at the side of the net.

Dallas got an insurance goal while the teams were playing 4 on 4 as Jagr picked up a loose puck in the slot and spun around with a shot that beat Dubnyk. It was Jagr’s fourth of the season.

The Stars put the game away for good with three minutes left to play as Garbutt was able to chip a shot past the Oilers goalie despite having defender Nick Shultz draped all over him.

“We are just trying to play hard right now,” Lehtonen said. “We know we are not the most skilled team out there with the biggest names. We are a hard working club and everybody in this room feels we have a chance to win on any given night as long as we push ourselves. We have done well the last few games here and hopefully we can keep it going.”

Notes: The Oilers made a surprise move before the game and decided to make veteran forward Ryan Smyth a healthy scratch. D Ryan Whitney was also benched for the third time in four games. .. The only significant injury for the Stars was forward Ray Whitney (foot) — on injured reserve and expected to miss four to six weeks.

NHL & NHLPA Expected To Talk Realignment

NEW YORK (CBS SPORTS) - After the highly contentious negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement, the NHL and NHLPA are about to go back to the board rooms to have discussions again. Instead of going back and forth about things like hockey-related revenue, realignment will be the key topic of the coming meetings. Hopefully, the two sides have learned to play nice since bringing the lockout to its merciful end.

According to Larry Brooks of the New York Post, the two entities are expected to get back together within the next week to discuss the league’s plans for realignment to go into effect for the 2013-14 season.

Last winter, with CBA negotiations looming, the NHL announced its plans for the league to be made up of four conferences — two with seven teams and two with eight — with the top four teams from each qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Only problem was the league neglected to run that by the NHLPA before making the announcement. The NHLPA wouldn’t sign off on it.

To refresh your memory, here are the four conferences the league proposed:

Conference A: Anaheim, Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose and Vancouver

Conference B: Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis and Winnipeg

Conference C: Boston, Buffalo, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay and Toronto

Conference D: Carolina, New Jersey, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told Brooks that the league is currently working on a realignment plan, but nothing has been finalized or approved by the Board of Governors.

The circumstances under which these realignment discussions will be held are different from when the NHL made its announcement last year. With both sides at the table and the CBA negotiations firmly in the rearview mirror, there’s reason to expect this to get done relatively painlessly.

The NHLPA, however, wants to be sure it has a strong voice in this discussion. “A year ago, when we raised the issue of increased travel for teams, the league did not have mock schedules for us to review that might have alleviated our concern,” NHLPA executive director Don Fehr told the Post. “And we had an issue with the fact that teams would either have a mathematical advantage or disadvantage of qualifying for the playoffs depending upon whether they’d be in a seven-team or eight-team conference.”

It appears the playoff structure proposed in the NHL’s realignment plans last year could be a point of contention, if it hasn’t changed. “If they present the same type of four-conference structure but have the information for us to review regarding scheduling and travel, and have a different playoff format that can ameliorate our concerns in that area, we’ll take it from there,” Fehr said.

So, these negotiations probably aren’t going to exactly be a walk in the park.

Early PP Goals Lead Stars Past Ducks 3-1

DALLAS (AP) — The Stars finally got their power play going. Twice in one period, in fact.

After managing just one goal in 16 opportunities over the previous five games, the Stars got goals from Trevor Daley and Jamie Benn on the man-advantage in the first period, en route to a 3-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night.

“Just keep working on it, watching some video, working on it in practice,” Benn said of the power-play unit’s success. “I think it just comes down to shooting pucks and keeping it simple and I think we did that tonight.”

After building an early 2-0 lead, Loui Eriksson sealed the win with a third-period score when he corralled Alex Goligoski’s cross-ice pass and fired a wrist shot past Anaheim goaltender Viktor Fasth with 7:14 remaining.

Goligoski, who was a healthy scratch Wednesday in Edmonton, added two assists for Dallas (6-5-1), which earned its third consecutive win.

Nick Bonino scored for the Ducks (7-2-1), who had won four in a row. It was the first regulation road loss this season for Anaheim.

“I want them to know that they didn’t come ready to play and what happens when you play good hockey clubs and you’re not ready to play,” Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. “It was a disappointing first period. I don’t think the rest of the game was disappointing, but you can’t win hockey games playing 40 minutes. It’s a 60-minute game.”

Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller left after the first period with a lower body injury. He made 14 saves, and Fasth finished with 11 stops.

“He wasn’t feeling very well so we made the change,” said Boudreau, who added that they wouldn’t know the severity until Hiller was fully evaluated.

Dallas also outshot Anaheim 28-21, marking the first time this season that it had outshot an opponent.

“We had a good third,” said Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan, whose club allowed just one shot against in the final period. “We limited our turnovers, we played smart hockey and it’s another little step for us and the way we have to play for us to be successful.”

Daley was strong at the other end as well, disrupting two breakaways. He helped stop Corey Perry in the first period, resulting in an easy save for Kari Lehtonen, and Kyle Palmieri didn’t even get a shot off on his opportunity in the second.

Lehtonen was excellent in goal, making 20 saves.

The Ducks cut the Stars’ lead to 2-1 with 4:37 remaining in the second period when Bonino scored for the fourth time this season, re-directing Luca Sbisa’s booming slap shot over Lehtonen’s shoulder.

Anaheim nearly tied it just over a minute later, but Lehtonen gloved Daniel Winnik’s backhander on a 3-on-1 rush.

“It was something you don’t want to see, three against one, but I got a little lucky there, I was able to make a good stop,” said Lehtonen, who is 5-1-0 against the Ducks with two shutouts over the last two seasons. “I think that helped everybody. I was real happy with that.”

Added Boudreau: “That would have made it 2-2. I think it would have been a different game.”

Dallas got off to a fast start, outshooting the Ducks 8-1 through the first seven minutes, and drawing the first power play when Brad Staubitz was sent off for roughing.

Daley capitalized at 8:48 when his slap shot from the point found its way through a screen and squeezed under Hiller’s arm. Shortly afterward, frustrations bubbled over after Stephane Robidas’ slash on Perry went undetected by the officials, incensing Perry and resulting in a fight between the two at 11:02.

“When he sticks his stick out, pulls it, I don’t know what you call that. It’s spearing to me,” said Perry of the play. “You’ve just got to call the first one and that … doesn’t happen.”

Staubitz then speared Dallas rookie Brenden Dillon in the groin at 12:34, earning a five-minute major and a game misconduct.

“What do you want me to say? Good refs have bad games,” Boudreau said of the penalty. “Like good hockey players have bad games, good refs have bad games. A spear, if you’re going to do that then Robidas got a spear on Perry and nothing was called. So what are you going to do?”

It took the Stars just 25 seconds to cash in on the extra-man opportunity, with Benn collecting his fourth goal in the last three games.

“It was big,” Benn said. “I thought we stayed disciplined in not retaliating on that penalty and it won us the game.”

Jagr Scores In OT To Lift Stars Past Oilers 3-2

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Even a veteran like Jaromir Jagr can still get excited about scoring in overtime.

The 40-year-old forward scored 1:46 into the extra period, lifting the Dallas Stars to a 3-2 victory over the injury-riddled Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night for their first winning streak of the season.

Jagr beat goalie Devan Dubnyk with a high wrist shot for his third goal of the year.

“That feeling never gets old,” Jagr said. “When you score in overtime, everybody is talking about it. That was a big goal for us.”

Jamie Benn and Derek Roy scored in regulation for the Stars (5-5-1), who have won two in a row.

Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan was relieved his team came away with the win, but thought it shouldn’t have allowed the Oilers back into the game in the third period.

“I liked the win in overtime, but I didn’t like the response after our two goals,” he said. “We kept on turning the puck over and over and putting the game in jeopardy. Until we realize that we are a team that has to grind out games — and even if it gets dicey out there we have to play a certain way — we’re not going to get traction. We have to learn to do a better job.”

Ales Hemsky and Justin Schultz scored for the Oilers, who were without three of their top four centers: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (day to day with a shoulder injury), Shawn Horcoff (broken knuckle) and Eric Belanger (broken toes).

Adding to their woes, center Anton Lander left the game in the first period with a foot injury.

Oilers coach Ralph Krueger lauded his team for working through adversity and said he hoped help would be on the way soon.

“We’re in the pack and in the games with an opportunity to win, we just need to get a healthy lineup together,” he said. “We’re hoping to have Nugent-Hopkins back for our next game on Saturday and Belanger back by Sunday. We want to get back deep into our lineup again and to the four lines we were rolling earlier in the season.

“We’ve had a strange string of events. But the positive on it is that Horcoff is the only long-term injury.”

The Oilers (4-3-3) are winless in their last four games — although they have earned points in three of them.

“Down the middle we’re hurting, for sure, but we found a way to battle through that adversity and earn another point,” forward Jordan Eberle said.

There were few good chances in the first period and most of them belonged to the Stars while they were short-handed. Dallas had several odd-man rushes late in the first and almost converted on one of them when Cody Eakin had Dubnyk beat but hit the post.

Edmonton broke the scoreless tie 3 minutes into the second following a mad scramble in front of the Dallas net. Nail Yakupov hit the post behind Stars starter Kari Lehtonen before Hemsky banked the rebound in off a defender.

Sam Gagner had an assist to extend his point streak to 10 games.

The sound of metal clanging rang out through Rexall Place with 7 minutes left as Loui Eriksson hit the post behind Dubnyk, leading immediately to a rush by Yakupov, who also hit the post on his shot.

A minute later the Stars tied the game as a shot by Benn appeared to deflect off Jeff Petry and into the Edmonton net. It was Benn’s third goal in six games since ending his contract holdout.

Dallas went up 2-1 with 1:16 left in the second period when Roy ripped a shot from the point during a power play that found the back of the net untouched. It was Roy’s first goal with the Stars.

Edmonton tied it 2-all 8 minutes into the third on a power play as Schultz let loose a slap shot from the point past Lehtonen. It was the third goal of the season for the Oilers’ rookie defenseman.

Jagr thinks it has taken some time for the Stars to find their footing, but they’re starting to come along.

“We had three new guys coming here and Jamie wasn’t signed,” he said. “We didn’t really have much of a chance to play together and not even much practice. We have to learn during the games. It is going to get better and better. It is just taking some time.”

The Stars return home to play the Ducks on Friday. The Oilers start a two-game road trip Saturday in Detroit.

Stars Take Down Avalanche 3-2

DENVER (AP) - Jamie Benn scored his first two goals of the season, and the Dallas Stars beat Colorado 3-2 on Monday, spoiling the night for Milan Hejduk as the Avalanche forward was honored for playing in his 1,000th NHL game.

Brenden Morrow also scored, and Kari Lehtonen made 29 saves for Dallas.

Hejduk had a goal — as he did in his first career game — and P.A. Parenteau added another in the Avalanche’s first home loss of the season.

There was a scary moment early in the game when referee Chris Rooney was hit by a puck after a shot by Dallas defenseman Jamie Oleksiak deflected off the skate of Colorado’s Paul Stastny.

The puck appeared to carom off the head of Rooney, who stayed down behind the Avalanche net. Rooney eventually skated off the ice.

No update was given on his condition.

The Avalanche committed two costly penalties late in the third, preventing them from mounting much offense. They pulled goalie Semyon Varlamov with 49 seconds remaining, but couldn’t score on Lehtonen. The game ended with the puck on Hejduk’s stick, but he was unable to take a final shot.

Morrow nearly gave Dallas a two-goal lead midway through the second period when he poked in a rebound.

However, he clipped Varlamov in the process, and the goal was disallowed. Morrow was given a penalty for goaltender interference.

Although the Avalanche didn’t convert on that penalty, they tied it at 2 when Parenteau knocked a puck out of the air for a power-play goal.

But Benn gave the Stars the lead right back when he lined a shot past Varlamov during a delayed penalty.

Benn and Morrow staked the Stars to a 2-0, first-period lead before either team really had a chance to settle in. Morrow’s first of the season was set up by Jaromir Jagr, who has at least one point against the Avalanche in seven straight games — a streak dating to 2002.

Dallas had a chance to extend its early lead, but couldn’t score despite having a 5-on-3 advantage for a full two minutes.

Late in the first period, the Avalanche got on the board when Hejduk gathered a rebound and put it past Lehtonen.
Hejduk was the star of the night as he skated in his 1,000th NHL game, becoming the 30th player to reach that milestone with the same organization. He is the first player to do it with Colorado.

Joe Sakic played in 1,378 games for the organization, but 508 were with the Quebec Nordiques and 870 after the team relocated to the Mile High City in 1995.

There was a video tribute before the game for Hejduk, along with Sakic presenting Hejduk with a silver hockey stick. The Avs also rolled the red carpet onto the ice so his wife and twin boys could join him.

Hejduk still remembers his first game — a 4-3 loss to Ottawa on Oct. 10, 1998, in which he had a goal and an assist.

“I didn’t know if I’d ever get here, and yet here I am,” said Hejduk, who was picked in the fourth round of the 1994 draft. “Pretty happy that I played for one organization; that’s definitely special.”

Making the honor all the more meaningful was the presence of Jagr, who is also from the Czech Republic.

“The best player in the history of the game there,” said Hejduk, who was teammates with Jagr when their country captured a gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. “Look at his numbers, I haven’t achieved half of what he did.”

Still, Hejduk, who will turn 37 on Valentine’s Day, is three points shy of joining Jagr (1,659) and Patrik Elias (901) as the only Czech-born players in NHL history to reach 800 points.

“I’ve had a lot of good memories,” Hejduk said.

NOTES: The Stars activated F Derek Roy (groin) and G Cris Nilstorp (groin) from the injured list. Nilstorp and D Jordie Benn were sent to the Texas Stars of the AHL. … Avs captain Gabriel Landeskog (head and leg) missed his fifth straight game. … F David Jones (knee) might return to practice as soon as Tuesday. DALLAS (AP) - The Dallas Stars have activated center Derek Roy and goalie Cris Nilstorp from the injured list.

Roy, who missed five games with a groin injury, will be available Monday night at Colorado. Nilstorp and defenseman Jordie Benn have been sent to the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League.

Nilstorp’s assignment means Richard Bachman will remain the backup to Kari Lehtonen.

Roy has two assists in four games for Dallas. He came over in an offseason trade with Buffalo. Benn is scoreless with four penalty minutes in eight games for Dallas.

Nilstorp missed four games with a groin injury. He was 0-2 filling in for Lehtonen. Nilstorp appeared in 28 games for the Texas Stars before joining Dallas after the lockout ended.

GLENDALE (AP) — The Dallas Stars have placed left wing Ray Whitney on the injured list because of a lower-body injury.

Whitney, who has been battling foot problems, played Friday against Phoenix at home, but went on the injured list before the teams met again Saturday night in the desert.

The 40-year-old forward led the Stars with two goals and four assists through the first eight games after signing with Dallas in the offseason.

Dallas filled his roster spot by recalling forward Reilly Smith from Texas of the AHL.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – One night after the Stars outlasted the Coyotes in Dallas, the two teams were back at it on Saturday in Glendale. This time it was the Coytoes who came out on top.

Former Stars net-minder Mike Smith stopped 17 shots and the Phoenix Coyotes were at their tight-checking best in a 2-0 win.

Nick Johnson scored his third goal of the season and Mikkel Boedker his second for the Coyotes, who have points in four straight games.

The Coyotes have gotten back to their stay-at-home style that helped them reach the Western Conference finals last season.

Phoenix kept the Stars to the outside offensively most of the night while getting sticks and their bodies in the way whenever they tried to shoot. Smith was there to turn away anything that reached the net for his 20th career shutout, first this season.

FRISCO (AP) - The Dallas Stars have recalled defenseman Jamie Oleksiak and forward Antoine Roussel from the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League.

Dallas also Wednesday assigned Reilly Smith to Texas.

The 6-foot-7 Oleksiak, a first-round pick in 2011, has 23 points (three goals, 20 assists) in 43 games for the Texas Stars and was an AHL All-Star this season. Roussel has eight goals and 11 assists and leads Texas with 103 penalty minutes.

Smith has gone scoreless in six games for Dallas and is still looking for his first career NHL point. He had 11 goals and 14 in 37 games for Texas this season.

DETROIT (AP) – Pavel Datsyuk stickhandled around a defender and sent a perfect pass across the front of the goal. All Valtteri Filppula had to do was shoot into an open net, and he had no problem scoring his second goal of the game.

“Whenever he has the puck, you can always expect it’s going to come your way,” Filppula said. “I’ve obviously played with him for a while now, but still, every once in a while you get surprised.”

Filppula was alert enough to score twice off passes from Datsyuk, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-1 victory over the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.

Henrik Zetterberg and Damien Brunner also added goals, helping Detroit rally after Loui Eriksson opened the scoring in the second period for Dallas.

All six of Dallas’ previous games this season were decided by one goal, but the Stars couldn’t keep this one close in the third after playing at Columbus the previous night.

“Saw some good things here coming off back to back, like the shot clock,” Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said. “See some good things coming.”

Jimmy Howard made 25 saves for Detroit, which outshot Dallas only 27-26.

Zetterberg scored on a two-man advantage in the final minute of the second period to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead, and Brunner and Filppula scored 23 seconds apart in the third.

Jordin Tootoo of Detroit and Eric Nystrom of Dallas dropped the gloves 3 seconds into the game, and Tootoo was in another fight later in the first period, this time with Brenden Dillon.

“I just expected him to get out and forecheck, but he took it upon himself to have a couple bouts,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “We don’t mind that either, but we’d just as soon he forecheck. He’s a guy that gives us a different dimension than we’ve had, and he’s physical out there, and guys know he’s out there.”

The 5-foot-9 Tootoo was giving up 6 inches in his fight with Dillon.

“Basically just trying to protect myself from getting hit — and just keep whaling,” Tootoo said.

The Stars had a two-man advantage for 39 seconds late in the first but couldn’t convert, and the period ended scoreless. The Red Wings have not scored in the first period all season.

Eriksson gave the Stars a 1-0 lead, lifting a rebound over Howard, but Filppula tied it later in the second when Datsyuk found him in front of the net.

Dallas was hurt late in the period by a pair of high-sticking penalties. Jamie Benn was given a double-minor with 3:41 remaining, and although Zetterberg went off 41 seconds later for tripping, Ray Whitney took a penalty for the Stars with 2:18 to play.

The end result was that the Red Wings had a 5-on-3 once Zetterberg’s penalty was over, and the Detroit captain took advantage for the go-ahead goal, beating goalie Kari Lehtonen with a slapper to the upper-right corner.

Lehtonen came within 3.4 seconds of a shutout in a win at Detroit last week, but he made only 21 saves this time and was pulled with 4:30 remaining in the game.

Brunner made it 3-1 in the third when he deflected a shot from the point past Lehtonen. Although there was some question as to the height of Brunner’s stick when he touched the puck, the goal stood.

Datsyuk then maneuvered around a defender and sent another nice pass to Filppula, who scored easily with Lehtonen out of position.

NOTES: Red Wings F Darren Helm was scratched with back inflammation, an ailment that is expected to improve with medication — instead of surgery that would’ve put him out of the lineup for a much longer period of time. … Jaromir Jagr’s assist on Eriksson’s goal was his first point since a two-goal, two-assist game against Phoenix in the season opener.

Stars Put Roy On IR & Clear Spot For Benn

DALLAS (AP) – The Dallas Stars have placed forward Derek Roy on injured reserve with a groin injury, clearing a roster spot for the expected debut of Jamie Benn on Monday night at Columbus.

Roy, who was acquired from Buffalo in a trade that sent Steve Ott to the Sabres, was hurt Thursday against Chicago. He has two assists in four games.

Benn and the Stars agreed on a five-year, $26.25 million contract the same night Roy got hurt. Benn, who was a restricted free agent, missed Saturday’s loss to St. Louis.

Holland hopes to model Harrison for 2013

Derek Holland and Matt Harrison had similar 2011 seasons. Holland went 16-5 with a 3.95 ERA, while Harrison went 14-9 with a 3.39 ERA.

Last year, though, Harrison progressed while Holland regressed. Harrison was the Rangers most consistent starter the entire season, going 18-11 with a 3.29 ERA and was selected to the All-Star Game. Holland, on the other hand, was inconsistent as he went 12-7 with a 4.67 ERA.

Now, Holland hopes his 2013 season is similar to Harrisonâ??s 2012.

â??Iâ??d like to do what he did last year,â?? said Holland, speaking at a Cowboy Santas Toy Drive event at Rangers Ballpark on Tuesday.

â??Harry did a great job for us, I donâ??t think he got enough credit. He was the most consistent pitcher and accomplished a lot for us. Iâ??m using a lot of what he did as motivation. â?¦ Last year was not a really good year.â??

Holland has already begun his preparations for next season, which started by meeting with team president and CEO Nolan Ryan around Thanksgiving. Holland tracked Ryan down at his office and the two talked about what he could improve upon.

Location was at the center of the discussion, as Hollandâ??s worst starts came when he had poor location. Holland gave up 32 home runs last season, but homers arenâ??t all that bad if they are limited to solo shots.

Holland and Ryan also talked about being more consistent start to start. Holland has a tendency to put together a couple good starts followed by a bad outing.

â??I never stayed on the same path,â?? Holland said. â??I need to figure out a way when Iâ??m not having a good game to still get those corners and work away from the middle of the plate.â??
