“The one thing he really wanted to make sure of was to send his regards to Beanie,” said Maddon, who sent text messages to his family to pass that on to his mother.
“He’s got all this information, some of the different quotes,” Maddon said of Scully. “It was pretty impressive. I’ve never asked for my photograph to be taken with anybody but we did, and I’ll keep that one.”
Maddon said Scully was very much aware of the young Cubs and wanted to know something about the players.
“It was a nice meeting, I’m very honored, but to get my photograph taken with him is very special,” Maddon said.
*Adam Jones is back in the lineup after exiting yesterday’s game with concussion-like symptoms. He went through a litany of tests pre-game and is OK to make the start, according to manager Buck Showalter.
As expected, the Orioles selected the contract of Dariel Alvarez from Triple-A Norfolk and reinstated Steve Clevenger from the paternity list, optioned Henry Urrutia to Triple-A to clear a roster spot.
The trio of moves, before Friday’s series opener in Texas, gives the O’s a fresh pair of bats —including right-handed hitting Alvarez— as the team is set to face three lefty starters over the weekend set.
The 26-year-old Alvarez hit .275/.305/.424 with 24 doubles, two triples, 16 home runs, and 72 RBI in 130 games with Norfolk this season. He currently leads the International League in at-bats (512), ranks tied for first in games played (130), third in total bases (217), fourth in hits (141), and fifth in RBI (72).
“It was tough early in the season,” said Alvarez, with assistant hitting coach Einar Diaz serving as interpreter. “I never stopped working, got help from all the coaches over [at Triple-A] and it was a good thing I never gave up. Now I’m here.”
The Cuba-born Alvarez was a Triple-A All-Star this season and owns a career 293/.335/.447 line in the Minors. He will wear uniform No. 12.
Clevenger is batting .370 (17-46) with four doubles, a home run, and seven RBI in 13 games with the Orioles this season, including five multi-hit efforts. He was placed on the paternity list on Tuesday, leaving after Monday’s game in Kansas City.
“It’s been awesome,” Clevenger said of welcoming daughter Peyton Lee with his wife, Tiffany. “My family’s very happy. I’m just glad everything went well. The doctors did a great job and the nurses are taking great care of them. She’s healthy and my wife is doing great and they’re going to be home tomorrow.”
Urrutia, 28, hit .265/.306/.382 (9-34) with a double, home run, and six RBI in 10 games with the Orioles this season.
